82Alphas are designed to be moved around with the carry handle. The damn things way 30+lbs, there's no easy way other than the handle or with a dual shoulder sling setup to move them around.
That being said: Nice picture, awesome detail. Be cool if it was turned into a full story/comic.

One, I'm used to seeing machine guns, some of which come with a detachable barrel with a handle fairly similar to the one shown.
Two, wouldn't it be easier to carry it closer to the body with two arms?

Yup, pretty much every handle on top of a gun that you see is going to be for moving the suckers around with. FALs, M60s, 249s, 82As, etc are all designed to be carried with the handle on top when not in immediate need of use.
2) Sorta. It's more useable if it's carried in a ready position, the issue is that once you hit about 11 to 12lbs, carrying a firearm across the chest ready to use gets tiring. Much easier to carry it straight arm if you aren't going to be using it soon.

I just saw this at the bottom of the site under painting. And thought it was a skull from a distance without realizing it was a scene. Very nice job though, that's for sure!
