Hi all!

Decided to re-work an old painting of mine that I made quite a long time ago. I was reading Game of Thrones at the time, hence the title (picture is not really related)
I hope you like it! Let me know your thoughts

Cheers!

this is amazing!! only flaw (if you can call it that) is that colors don't fade, what i mean is that in the front of the drawing colors should be darker and brighter than on the back. because of that eye automaticly sees the mountains first and later on you discover that there is a man on the horse standing right in the front. i repeat, drawing is indeed amazing, i hope i'll learn how to draw stuff like that digitally (i'm used to oil paints, aquarelles and ect)

Thank you for the comment!
You are absolutely right, but in this case I didn't want to focus the eye on the knight/horse, that's why I took some liberties when painting the further landscape as that was my main focus (the whole expansiveness of the snowy landscape)

And if you already know how to paint traditionally then painting digitally it's just a matter of learning the tools because after that it's actually easier in my opinion

Cheers

First of all, technically speaking this is much more refined, details are much much better and so are the value range and richer color scheme. However, in some ways, the old picture seems better to me. For one thing, the cliffs seemed more realistic, but maybe you were looking for a more fantasy-like effect and that's fine. The forested areas though seem too much like flower patches in a garden, too orderly, too neat, there's the dense forest and then suddenly a bare snow field with no transition between them whatsoever. Also, the trees are all too equal in sizes. I especially liked how the nearby trees helped to frame the lower part of the scene in the old picture. Then the even more important thing, while the clouds seem very nice and stormy with all the value range and contrast in them, they are much more a background here while they clouded a great deal of the scenery in the previous version thus becoming a major part of it. This change has lost you most of the awesome atmosphere the picture had, especially given that the distant hills show almost no aerial perspective at all. I am sorry to criticize like that, if there were no previous version I'd just say that this is an awesome painting and case closed. But just felt you ought to know....
On the other hand I like the more bright blazing fires and the much more pronounced warm pink tones on the near side of the mountains. This is a really nice touch and gives much more life to the picture. The cyan gloss in the river is also very pleasant, especially combined with the icy cracks.

Thank you for the constructive comment!
I perfectly understand your point of view, and I knew some people would like the older piece better, and that's totally fine.
They are different in some aspects, specially in the way I painted the fog/clouds, which like you said made the atmosphere different. I still like this one better, as I think the older one just has to many mistakes as I didn't know better at the time, but mostly I think they are just different in tone and mood, and only share the same elements.
I 100% agree on what you said about this one lacking aerial perspective though - This is something I need to improve upon in my images in general!

Thank you once again for the great comment!

Cheers!

Indeed, they are different. Seems like you didn't just remaster the painting, but also the feeling you were after.
About aerial perspective, you do have pieces with very good one, your newest painting being a prominent example

You're very welcome. It's always good to meet an artist who accepts constructive criticism and even takes the time to reply to it.

Really cool! I love how you kind of divided the picture into fourths; dark and light landscape, with a dark and light sky. It's really compelling. I think I'll keep it in mind for when I do a landscape. Awesome work!

First let me say great art, so forgive rant below as it shouldn't take anything away from that fact.

Second, the first announcement that Winter was coming occurred in 1991. Now over 20 years later despite an entire TV series running over five years and four other books that completely sunk in quality after #3 Fatty McMartinson still thinks the phrase "Winter is Coming" should carry weight.

I've simply come to the conclusion GRRMs "Winter" has permanent ED due to poor diet and obesity and will/can never come. Probably not too different from GRRM himself actually.

Haha thank you for the laugh!

I honestly cringed when I wrote this title in this day, as I also think that this phrase is completely tired at this point, but I just wanted to make this reference to my previous work which had the same name! At the time there was no TV show and there were only 3 books I think, so it was still "cool" to say that the God damn winter was coming

Cheers

Impressive, as always... And the comparison between the two versions is fairly instructive, too (I am glad, by the way, that you left the original painting in your gallery, even though you revisited it -- for those of you inattentive deviants, here is Winter is coming Mk 01).

There are evidently differences in style : the new painting is more detailed, has a slightly more complex and more "cinematic" composition (the second mountain range in the background, with the farthest tower, is a new addition, for instance), and it strives for a more realistic look in the textures (rock, snow, water, trees...) -- mainly the result of spending more time on this piece than you originally did five years ago ?

Something I find fascinating is the way the major features remain the same (down to the first tower framing the picture on the left and the storm coming in from the right), yet the atmosphere is subtly different between the two versions. Many comments already mention a form of kinship with the warning beacons of Gondor, and there is indeed a specific feeling of urgency in the 2015 painting, which especially recalls the scene in Peter Jackson's film : the particular tremor that occurs when a course of action has been irrevocably chosen and there is no turning back. The 2010 painting feels more subdued : the fires look like they have been burning for a long time already (for decades ?), and the whole atmosphere is more meditative and contemplative. I would say this is also the result of other details, such as a scene more shrouded in mist, or a subtle difference in the shape of the firs on the right-hand side of the picture (more stylised, more elongated, more Romantic, in a word, whereas their squatter 2015 counterparts more distinctly blend in with the landscape). In any case, both versions have their own strengths and evocative powers : I would certainly be hard put to choose one over the other. (One essential question, though : did the newly crackling flames of 2015 frighten the circling birds of 2010 ?)

Do keep up the great work -- and I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy birthday as well !

Thank you for the great comment and the birthday wishes!!

I do agree that while maintaining the same elements, both images portray a different feeling.
Regarding the birds, I actually forgot to paint them in this new one! Nice catch
