Description
A new painting--made with pencils, watercolor, and pretzel salt! The little 'stars' in the background were created using the pretzel salt on wet watercolor paint and letting it dry. (The salt was then brushed off). It's a fun effect, but you have to be patient and let it dry all the way (or just get a blowdryer). For some reason I'm really happy with his shirt--it turned out very smooth with a little bit of gradient. Well, please feel free to tell me what you thinkRelated content

What a cool effect. I didn't know salt would create such an effect. At first i thought they were created with droplets of water. The way you colored the backgrounds really go well with this effect.

Thank you! I was pleased with the salt, maybe I'll do it again (I have plenty of pretzels and hence plenty of salt!)

Yeah, sometimes it's just more fun to experiment on your own and see what happens. But I like looking at painting books, sometimes they inspire me to do something that otherwise I'd never have thought to do (like sprinkle pretzel salt on my painting!!)

Mmm, I love this! The textures on it and the blending of the colours are really nice. I love his shirt, too, the gradient is a wonderful effect. The background is great too, that colour green jsut works so well with everything else.
The guy you painted though, reminds me a little of a thinner, bishie-er Rhys Ifans. [May just be me. @_@]

okay, i get to parrot everybody's opinion that the shirt looks awesome--it looks lived-in, like the dye of the fabric is rustic and kind of patina-ed, and i love the pretzel-salt technique!! ~kaerless on DA once mixed a bunch of fine, fine sand with thick tempera paint, and got an incredibly swet medium to work with...it was painting and scultpure all at once! Try it if you ever want to do a huge composition!

Wow, that sounds pretty neat--it probably takes a long time to dry though! But it sounds really fun, maybe I'll try it sometime. Thank you! (I always love getting tips or new techniques)

I love the salt effect! I try to use that on my watercolors sometimes, but it never comes out right. I should use bigger grains of salt... hmm...
Anyway, I love the background and how his hand/arm is positioned.

Thank you Bigger grains will probably work. It also has to be wet enough, but not too wet. XD

Wow! I love this so much, it's glowing. you are incredible! love it! The detail in the skin in hair are awesome, especially in water color. Do you base your characters on people you know? They seem to have real stories behind them.

Sometimes I will base it on someone I've seen, or a combination of several people. It's usually not a very concious thing, more like I have an image of someone that I'd like to get on paper, and many times that image in influenced by people I've seen or known.

Thank you! I used many colors in the skin, I think a mix of warm and some cool (for the shadows especially) makes it more lifelike.

Pretzel salt! That is a very good idea, especially since I hate pretzels with salt... I can just save some when I brush mine off. XD (compulsive saver-of-stuff) I normally use tablesalt, but it doesn't get such dramatic effects. I like his shirt very much as well!

Mm, I love salty pretzels (unless it's too much salt, then it just hurts my mouth). But this salt came in a little bag in a package of microwave soft-pretzels, so I can choose how much I put on it. Er, anyway, I tried table salt before too, but I think my paper was a bit too wet and the salt all disintegrated away.

I'd say the shirt turned out very nice too, your water color skills just get better with each picture.
I really like the background, makes me want to scrape up some pretzel salt too (that kinda salt is bigger chunks then normal salt, huh?)

jkearney In reply to asunnyspirit [2005-02-05 22:35:40 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it's quite a bit bigger. I just took extra salt from a microwaveable soft pretzel package (the pretzels were yummy) and used that. I one time tried to use just regular table salt, but it really just didn't look good. You could barely tell that I had done anything at all
