Although I'm not fond of the current incarnation of the cybermen (upgrade indeed!)...I really like how you display the changing design over the years. The accuracy and detail is amazing. Great work!

I agree. The new ones look too much like robots and more disturbingly, like that little robot from Buck Rogers.

In all seriousness, this is beautiful. Very artistic, very iconic. Wonderful. It's heading directly into my favs.

Woah woah, Promus-Kaa. That's not on. I really don't think it's fair doing that to someone else's work. Make your own piece, fine. Do not hack a huge great hole in someone else's artwork, that they've clearly spent hours of love, sweat, tears and emotion on, just because you don't approve of what they've drawn. That's like blanking out swear words in a public library book with a permanent marker. It's a defacement of something everyone should be allowed to enjoy, or ignore if they don't agree.

I like their design as far as "mindless sci-fi robots" go, but I loathe and despise them in regards to being Cybermen. They're not even Cybermen people, come on!! They're not part of the Mondasian lineage...so why do people do group pictures and include them in it??

And the CyberDalek was a "commission" of sorts for a friend of mine who's a New Series fan.

Inutaisho001 In reply to Promus-Kaa [2007-10-26 16:22:36 +0000 UTC]

The AU Cybermen were what the Mondas should have been. Cold, emotionless, relentless. The Mondas Cybermen were cheap Dalek wannabes who despite their claims of no-emotion... showed it all the time! And practically the only times they touched on Cyber-conversion, a key element of their design... was during Tomb briefly and during Attack. Weak.

But to each their own.

Promus-Kaa In reply to Inutaisho001 [2007-10-30 04:43:27 +0000 UTC]

I don't think so. They're dumb, and they can't plan anything but just stomp around and shoot people. The REAL Cybermen are cold, calculating, and extremely clever bastards; the old episodes with the Cybermen (no, I'm not talking about the post-Baker Cyber-stories) are some of the most complex and involved stories in Doctor Who history.

The new ones, as my friend pointed out, are the ones who are the "Dalek wannabes" in plastic suits that look a little too much like Iron-Man to really be original designs. And the dumb catchphrase?? Come on.

I think that the Daleks and Cybermen yelling "DELETE DELETE DELETE EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE" is more of a reflection of Russell T. Davies' writing style and less on that of the Cybermen and Daleks themselves, respectively.

Drew Struzka couldn't have done it better!!

I LOOVE the extra touch of adding Mondas in there...but the New Series Cybermen should NOT be on the picture since they aren't really Cybermen (certainly not from Mondas), and like the rest of the New Series they totally suck, big time.

Promus-Kaa In reply to Inutaisho001 [2007-10-26 15:49:12 +0000 UTC]

Personal opinion has nothing to do with the simple fact that the New Series Cybermen are NOT true Cybermen, since they're not from Mondas.

Inutaisho001 In reply to Promus-Kaa [2007-10-27 02:10:28 +0000 UTC]

The Doctor called 'em Cybermen before he heard them or Lumic declare their name. He recognized the handlebars. He thinks they're Cybermen, then they're bloody Cybermen.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to Inutaisho001 [2007-10-29 19:04:23 +0000 UTC]

Cybermen are, by definition, near-human beings from the planet Mondas who replaced parts of their anatomy with mechanical pieces until (like Darth Vader) they become "more machine than man." Lumic's robot-men don't fit any of those definitions.

OOOOHHHH but they have the HANDLEBARS!!! *gasp* OMG then they MUST be Cybermen!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inutaisho001 In reply to Promus-Kaa [2007-10-29 20:15:53 +0000 UTC]

You're still ignoring the fact that the DOCTOR called 'em CYBERMEN! Maybe not your precious Mondasian Cybermen, which, fine, I'll buy. They're not the same. But that doesn't mean you have to draw lines in the sand. That's how the Imperial/Renegade Dalek schizm happened, in case you forget your precious Who history.

Promus-Kaa In reply to Inutaisho001 [2007-10-30 05:06:46 +0000 UTC]

The FAKE Doctor, you mean. And he probably only called 'em "Cybermen" because he was still high off all that caffine he drank that morning, saw the handlebars and thought "CYBERMEN!!" in his usual hyperactive way.

But this discussion began with my observing that the AU Cybusmen shouldn't be on a picture that displays the Mondasian lineage of Cybermen, since they are NOT part of the Mondasian lineage of Cybermen and therefore don't belong. Whatever RTD made the Non-Canon Doctor call the AU robots doesn't matter; they're not Cybermen by definition.

Russano-Greenstripe In reply to Promus-Kaa [2008-09-07 05:46:01 +0000 UTC]

Now, I have to admit my favorite Cybermen are the new RTD incarnation; the later two above it look like they have mustaches and beards, which just seems horribly wrong. But my question to you is this: If you posit that the new AU cyborgs (since they are part machine and part man, that's a cyborg) are NOT Cybermen, what should they be titled?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to Russano-Greenstripe [2008-09-08 20:32:21 +0000 UTC]

Cybusmen.

The original Cybermen were closer to being true cyborgs since they were a lot like Borg - their Cyber parts were installed on their pre-existing Mondasian bodies (sometimes with replacement limbs, and since they covered everything with a special suit they were a lot like Darth Vader, as well).

The new ones are just organic brains stuffed in wholly robotic bodies, so they barely qualify as cyborgs.

Rimmer-Gnome In reply to Promus-Kaa [2011-08-30 16:24:31 +0000 UTC]

Nah mate, they're Cybermen.

If you watch The Pandorica Opens, you can clearly see that they have fully organic heads. Also, the old Cybermen barely related to humans either. The only ones that really looked even vaguely like they used to be human were the first ever ones. From then on, it's only ever been subtle touches.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to Rimmer-Gnome [2011-09-06 20:47:17 +0000 UTC]

They're not from Mondas, and they have nothing to do with Mondas, so they're not Cybermen.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rimmer-Gnome In reply to Promus-Kaa [2011-09-07 16:35:31 +0000 UTC]

It's all about the concept of parallel universes though isn't it? I mean, in that universe, the cybermen's home planet is Earth. Yeah, they're still Cybermen but of a different universe.

I get what you're saying though, no they're not from Mondas therefore they're not part of the Cybermen's evolution but I think this picture is to depict the evolution of the Cybermen in terms of how the Cybermen have adjusted with the times, not how within Doctor Who contiuety they have changed. It's quite obvious that you're a fan and you know your stuff but you've got to accept the fact that it's quite clear that the artist who drew this is also quite the fan and they like the 2007 Cybermen and have chosen to include them in this drawing.

Also, if you've been watching the new series the Cybermen have a lot in common with the Mondasian Cybermen and their technologies have noticeably improved so it is possible that maybe the Mondasian Cybermen have stolen the technology of those from the alternate reality so perhaps these Cybermen ARE from Mondas. Also, there are rumours buzzing round that classic era Cybermen are going to be in the series six part two finale so maybe there will be a definite new addition to the Mondasian lineage.

Also, nice Steampunk pics there

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to Rimmer-Gnome [2011-10-01 17:17:51 +0000 UTC]

Look, I just like to keep things simple. The New Series Cybusmen are not from Mondas, so they are NOT Cybermen. They're Cybermen-esque, but they are not Cybermen. Cybermen are from Mondas, not from "Cybus Industries" on an "alternate Earth." Plain and simple.

And I'm glad you enjoyed my pictures.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rimmer-Gnome In reply to Promus-Kaa [2011-10-01 21:59:17 +0000 UTC]

I understand your viewpoint, I just don't agree with it.

Besides, no point in arguing as neither of us will sway the other

And don't mention it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to Rimmer-Gnome [2011-10-04 23:25:46 +0000 UTC]

Well I don't really enjoy arguing, either, especially nerd arguments, lol. But there's nothing to argue - Cybermen are from Mondas, Cybusmen are from Alternate Earth. Referring to the Cybusmen as "Cybermen" is a misnomer; even the Doctor says so in the first Cybusman episode.
