Can't think of a quick way to do mud/trees, etc.
I usually try to get as close as I can with grey markers, then select bits of it with the magic wand and lighten/darken parts. I think this one was also hit with "Plastic Wrap" filter.

for craps sake! those are some really detailed tank pics. also nice effects and layout on the final page.
how did you do that excellent looking muddy ground. have you done any tutorials before?
