Well, marshmallow and nitroglycerine turned out to be an evolutionary dead end, as did highly-enriched U235 skeletons (when too many ponies got together, the so called "dirty sparkle" left small, radioactive craters).
Like all evolution, small steps. A 1% reproductive advantage will become 99% dominant in only a couple dozen generations.
