Description
This, along with the Kornilov Shock Regiment was one of the first and one of the most famous and longest-lived volunteer units in the Russian army/White Movement during the Russian Civil War. Formed on the 17th November 1917, they are named after General Sergei Leonidovich Markov, General in the Imperial Russian Army in 1917 and supporter of the 'Kornilov affair' in which he attempted a coup d'état against the Russian Provisional Government lead by Alexander Kerensky in August 1917, the failed coup increased support for the Bolshevik's by demonstrating the government was fighting amongst itself and was too weak to rule, hence the Bolshevik's gained a bigger foothold for their revolution later that year. General Markov was originally one of the main leaders of the White Movement but was killed in battle at the village of Shablievki in the Kuban region. Unit's that got their patronage from General Markov were nicknamed "Markovtsev" (Марковцы) as a sort of nickname like "Bolsheviks".They used a modified 1914-17 Gimnastyorka, (quite similar to the future M43 Soviet Gimnastyorka) with white piping along the button flap and around the collar. On the shoulders they wore the Markov Regimental colours of black and white with white piping and a white elaborate 'М' for Markov's initials. The officer on the right is also wearing two medals, one is the Order of St. George 4th Class, which is an old Russian order that has been around since the 18th century and the Order of St. Vladimir 4th Class, which has also been around since the 18th Century however unlike the Order of St George, this order ended after the end of the Imperial Russian Empire. On the left sleeve a chevron was worn with the colours of the Russian flag, red, blue and white used by military units of the White Army.

Were they former Russian Imperial officers who had their men lost to the Revolution and reorganized as footsoldiers?

I see you have finally stopped using my stone-age medals and started going to my more modern ones.

These are extremely detailed and superfine, makes mine look shoddy and bedraggled, even before the Winter March and Retreat from the Crimea!!
