The friendship between Griffon and Pony just shouldn't be.Β
Lionheart: Never start a a relationship with a Pony, it will most of the time end in tears...sometimes in a Hippogriff....but mostly in tears.

I know that line if only from the Batman: The Animated Series episodeΒ "Mad as a Hatter"which was the origin story of that character. The last scene where he mutters the line while looking on as his love embraces her boyfriend, and the camera pans to the statue of the Mock Turtle with a single tear on it's cheek was quite the emotional moment.
So I know how painful this must feel for Gilda here.

I know right? also Brohoof for a fellow Batman: TAS fan /)
A cartoon show takes a lot of guts to make you feel genuinely sad about things like that. (I'm looking a you Mr. Freeze.)

(\ Yeah, especially if it's for the villains. As the Nostalgia critic said "the bad guys weren't always just bad guys. Sometimes they were ordinary people like you or me, whose lives got destroyed by tragic events." That is a power feeling. When a story can make you feel just as sympathetic towards the villain as the hero then the writers are definitely doing something right.
MLP has yet to really pull that off. Yeah one could point to, say, Trixie or Discord or even Princess Luna, but with little to no backstories for each of them I'd argue the sympathy for most is based on the hope they'll do better after redemption rather than knowing what they went through before they turned bad. Still, give it time and I'm sure we'll get some really interesting characters we can watch go through all the levels of a character arc.

Now I felt bad for Gilda. I hope she's alright.
