The black thing is a deamon in a way based on the little dancing ones from "Night on Bald Mountain" the snake in the elephant skull is based on "Bess" from Scary Stories to tell in the dark where a rattlesnake lives inside a horse skull. Also the fire coming out of its mouth is inspired by Why Mosquitos buzz in people's ear where the rabbit images a python as a giant fire breathing snake.
