jollyjack — How To Play GTA 4

Description I measure the quality of a game by how much fun I have and my reluctance to turn off the console at the end of each gaming session.
GTA4 currently has me swearing a lot, wringing the controller in frustration and kicking said console until the power cuts out.
I can’t even abandon the main missions to explore the (inarguably pretty) game-world in peace, which would have been its saving grace; I keep getting phone-calls asking why I’ve not taken a particular character out to play a dull and repetitive mini-game!! I know I don’t have to, but I also know that if I don’t it’s going to take me longer to access hidden missions. In effect, I’m being punished for wanting to do what a sandbox game is meant to let you do: What you want, when you want, how you want.
I’ve had the game for 2 weeks. The first few days were great, but now the only reason I go back to it is to justify the stupid amount of money I spent on it.

My boss has a CD cleaner for the library that took like every scratch off my SA game after I let a "friend" borrow it. Yeah, it looked like he took sandpaper to it >.<

This proves what I've said about you; you're deffinatly more then what you appear at first glance. Only someone with pureobbjective opinion is ready to stand in front of people who are all calling something a masterpiece/pure garbage, and say in the loudest voice posible "You're f&£^ing wrong!" and it takes a neaar genius to convice them that you're right.
Thank god I'm too young to play this, because I didn't want to play it anyway... still, we're all going to get our hands on subject matter that is deamed bad for us in one way or another. The produsers probably rated it 18 because they knew that anyone younger would kill due to the frustration. At least, according to what you've stated.

... Damn.

read the manual (i think) it tells yon how to switch your phone off from receiving missions in-game. that way you can explore until you feel like doing missions without being hassled.

I like GTA4 but it could have been made more fun if the social networking wasn't so heavy handed. (I'm playing videogames so i don't have to go outside and interact with people )

Oh man.......I definatly feel you...
I've been a victim of the phone ring of death when in a fire fight (You ever heard a machine gun shoot at you at point blank range EVEN with body armor on? It totally screwed me over)

Overall...its kind of a good game (Bought it on saturday) but like all games, it has its flaws (Driving...skills....agh...)

I am reading this as the very events depicted here are happening to me. In that very order. You're comic has expressed my views in a way I couldn only hope to. I will forward this to everybody I know and make it a part of all my forum signatures. This game a 10/10? Not a chance.

I haven't read anyone else's comments, but open the phone, go down to options, find something like "turn phone to silent" that'll shut off all incoming calls. You have to turn it back on when your done wandering around, but it does help.

I've never been a fan of the GTA games, myself. Mostly I just put in the button combination to get a rocket launcher and start blowing stuff up and then see how long it takes for the cops to gun me down. I prefer a high level of fantasy in my games (though, noteworthy, is that they don't have to take place in clichéd fantasy elves/dwarves/humans/dragons environments, just that they be fantastically rooted in non-reality, for the most part) that the gritty caliber of simulated realism games like this present. That could, however, be part of my personality that still has a vivid imagination where I imagine a complicated choreography of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" throughout the Wal-Mart where I work.

This is a longer comment than I meant to make...

Alright we get it you don\'t like video games, enough is enough, Jesus fucking Christ.

Alternatively, why don\'t you do one about Smash Bros. Brawl and complete the circle of video games that everyone loves voicing their irrelevant, loudmouthed and biased opinions on with crappy webcomics?

You're clearly just looking at the pretty pictures rather than reading the strips. If you had, you'd see that most of the HTP strips are on games that I enjoyed.

I've found out that if you accept any plans when someone phones and then immediately phone to cancel you don't lose any standing with them, so really you don't have to take anybody out until you want to increased my enjoyment of the game. I don't relaly like trying hard at a series of missions and then quickly socialising with everyone so they still like me. I don't know what all the bonuses are but so far none of them have really been worthing getting to 100% like.

Hint: you can turn off the mobile, and that pauses the storyline. Bam! instant sandbox mode

There's an option that disallows calls from getting to your phone, so that nothing happens, just just do whatever you want. Plus, cheats if you ever want to mess around. 360 port allows you to keep the cheats you dialled into speed dial, so you can keep getting more weapons or vehicles in seconds. Just don't save. :0

I have to admit, it was a bitch always having to take someone out, else they would hate me. I really did hate that. And the missions were really fucking terrible when it came to dying, right at the end, because of some weird fuck up. The last mission, is the biggest bitch of them all. HOW THE FUCK WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHEN TO JUMP OFF THAT RAMP!? Ya know?

I've never tried playing it online yet. Well, cause I don't have live. I heard it was fun. But lets see how much it needs to load...

You can turn off messages on your phone, which will pause the story and get NPCs to leave you alone until you turn it back on.

Powerpuff-Hunter In reply to ??? [2008-05-14 18:33:54 +0000 UTC]

1-3) Lol.

4) Okay, so what I'm hearing is that you can turn the cell phone off to stop people from calling you and to stay out of story mode. Here's the problem: what if you would like to play story missions without being interrupted? Sure, I suppose it's "realistic" to have to turn the cell phone off before and on after each mission, but it's not very fun. Why can't there just be a "pick up the phone" button (say, Select or Back) so that you can choose on the fly whether to be interrupted? And if you don't hit the button, they go to voicemail. "I sneak into Yakuza hideout right now. Please leave message, and I get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks to you, and goodbye!"

5) I'll be honest: I liked SA's stat system. There's something about leveling up that I find satisfying, even if it is a bit MMORPG-grindy. What I didn't like was the girlfriend system, and if IV's networking is anything like that, I may have to rage. Note to game designers: just because a mini-game is optional doesn't mean it doesn't have to be fun. The only GTA to do networking right was GTA2, where you earn respect by doing what you do anyway. Coincidentally (or not), this system was also implemented by Mercenaries, a game which is fun.

6) No checkpoints? No... checkpoints? RAAAGE!

7) I don't do multiplayer, so no loss there.

8) Lol.
