Description And the naysayers wonder why I don't listen to them....

You shouldn't either! If you feel in your gut that it's the right course of action; it usually is.

(.....unless your gut tells you to "go play in traffic". Cuz your gut's not telling you the right course of action, there. It's trying to kill you.)

Wonder where I'd be right now if I'd listened to those teachers and focused on learning all those important skills that I've never found a use for in the real world?

I'm guessing; Data Entry.

Followed by suicide......

And writing is not an art?

Gee, have I ever been mislead.

But seriously: the people who say writing isn't art need a brick in the face. I don't care if the first art pieces were cave drawings, it takes skill to write.

Skill that many people don't have because they refuse to try and give it life.

So screw those naysayers as well.

You go, girl! (Yeah, I know that you're not a girl.)

It just goes to show that people aren't always as right as they think. I realized that personally when I was told numerous times that I'd never pass the 8th grade (and many others, for that matter). Yet, here I am: a high school graduate moving on to college soon. I only failed one grade, and that was 5th... because I was drawing too much.

Tell me about it. When I was a teenager, my mom was always telling me how much it annoyed her that I spent my time "entertaining myself" instead of, say, doing schoolwork or something that looks useful. How did I entertain myself? By reading endless amounts of animal and popular science books, drawing and writing. And how do I make a living today? As a science writer and illustrator.

Mind you, I also graduated all my schools with top grades and have never had any use of those papers ever since. Though I do think that most the information I have gathered through 17 years in different schools is important. There's been very little I haven't needed later.

Isn't there a saying about success being the best kind of revenge? Then, the naysayers are done in by the best evidence there is - reality! Keep at it, though, so far, I would say that you have already succeeded.

As an artist, we are not meant to be accepted. We simply create until the day that we die. Sometimes that creativity makes us money ... and sometimes it merely prevents our souls from dying ... but one way or another we must create, for that is what we were born to do.

Had that problem in a collage art class. Teacher comes in, apparently in a nasty mood, and blurts out "nobody ever makes money drawing cartoon animals! Nobody!"
To which I replied "I guess then the Disney company is a figment of our imaginations then?"
She was very, very quiet all day long. I usually don't speak up like that, but when it's coming from a lady who has such a crappy class students suddenly find themselves "enrolled" without their consent by guidance counselors who are trying to keep the class afloat because the art teacher supplies them with free business cards...yeah. I'm not sure you have that much insight into the artistic world for me to take you seriously then. For the record, all we learned that semester was how to draw and shade a sphere...and make business cards. Seriously.

Isn't that always the way? They act like they're the end-all, know-it-all of cultured art, and yours isn't worth scrap, but they can't do their own job as an educator.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeartist In reply to UNRELENT [2012-10-30 21:29:34 +0000 UTC]

Well, you still end up learning something one way or the other. Sometimes school is a waste of time and money with teachers like those.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UNRELENT In reply to Zeartist [2012-11-01 21:11:11 +0000 UTC]

True enough. You can learn from anywhere and anything, no matter how bad it is - it just won't be the what you expected to learn.
For example, I learned how to sneak around campus, from class to class while avoiding the people who handed out the bizarre campus newsletter with an almost deranged zeal, no matter how many you already had on your person. It's time to change schools when you pick your clothes based on how much it works as makeshift camouflage.

No matter how successful an artist is people will always say the will never get any where.

And here is another cheerful though - most artists work only becomes really valuable and sort after when they are dead.
