Description
Enlightenment2' x 3'
Ink and Matte Ground on Mylar
Enlightenment is my experience so far focusing on the Pineal gland. The pineal to my knowledge is a Semi Hemispherical shaped gland that spontaneously occurs 49 days after conception of birth. The buddhists say it takes 49 days after death to pass on to the next life, be it reincarnation, or evolution, or heaven or what ever it is you believe. The pineal gland is a light sensitive organ that has a cornea a lens and a retinal. Scientists believe it is the precursor to the eye in mammals. Rene Descartes believed the pineal gland was the seat of the human soul. The pineal gland secretes melatonin and Dimethyltryptamine. DMT is an alkaloid very akin of lsd or psyloscibin. Scientists have yet to uncover the reason for any organism to produce alkaloids. They have no evolutionary reason and they take plants up to two years of extreme hard work to even make.
Im still really in the dark at what I am getting at, but this is where I am right now.
If you have any thign to add to maybe point me in a good direction in this subject please do.
Until then.

i like the title from this work, i have to begin with
and i like the tip of the "tail" of the circle of enlightenment, but i think the transition from circle to tail could be a lot messier -- being an abstract traditional piece, i think more paint splatters and, well, abstract marks would have done it well.
right now the edges seem too smooth -- on the circle that is to be expected, but i would still put some random, sparse splatters here and there so it's not completely like, "BLAH, THERE'S A CIRCLE."
i do like the numbers in the circle though -- nice touch. gives a feeling of thought and mathematics.
the smaller circle, though, seems kind of... there. it serves no purpose to me. maybe it has a purpose but i'm a failure at symbolism, so...
but if it were me, i wouldn't have had the smaller circle there -- it seems kind of pointless.
and maybe i'm totally cliched, but i would include an eye somewhere, an abstract one... i always get the feeling of enlightenment from the eye
...this critique kind of sucked... sorry!

This artwork is probably one of the best I have seen so far. The details, the colours and the composition makes it very unique and very intriguing. The concept of afterlife is very well represented by adding more depth and darkness into the colours. Nicely done.

Wow, so many comments and I've just finished reading them all.
Hope you've learned something as I did by doing so youself
This is an amazing piece of artwork as this subject is enlightening. And I mean that.
I've been wondering for too long how dreams worked since it's so hard to imagin e things when fully awake. Just by closing my eyes I can't see things as vivid and real as my dreams. Now I know a bit more and thank you so much that you've done this deviation. It's beautiful work and I'm sure you've enjoyed creating it.
It really looks like a dream, so this piece fits the concept.

this makes me think of a placenta, and according to my philosophy teacher, the first instance of enlightenment is as you are born and come into the light, after having made the journey through the dark

Beautiful layered work. I love it.
By the way, I heard that when you activate this gland, it will 'tick' so fast that it will 'stand up' like a cobra, similiar to Eygpitian pharoah head pieces. Or something that goes like that.

I wonder... since the pineal produces melatonin, and when I take melatonin pills for insomnia and have the most vivid, lucid dreams.. if there is a link between the melatonin (3mg, about a hundred times greater a dose than the body naturally produces, if I'm not mistaken), the dreams, and the pineal's production of DMT.
I wonder.. if the pineal is the third eye, if true enlightenment must come from that gland in a state of frenzied production of DMT and melatonin... or something. I'm just thinking about these connections. Also, melatonin production is at night, and that's when many people become inspired, not to mention night time always has a sort of mysterious atmosphere to it that can be almost mystical at times. Never looked too far into the pineal gland, but I definitely will be researching it a bit more now.

jonathanjames In reply to MellotronPie [2008-08-01 17:14:31 +0000 UTC]
yeh yeh. i read too though that it is melatonin that keeps the dmt production in check at night. it somehow interacts with it to produce the chemical we need to reach REM sleep in a good combination of both those chemicals.

Concerning your thoughts, have you ever read any books by Robert Anton Wilson or Dr Christopher Hyatt, you may find them of great interest.
A lot of their texts will teach you techniques for 'tweaking' your gland !
Maybe ?
