Star Trek Chimera: Phase IISeason Five - Episode Six:
“The Nightingale’s Cry” - Interlude
Inside the sterile and bustling corridors of the Bozeman City Hospital, Darren Tel sat anxiously beside his husband, Jason Bush-Tel, who lay weak and feverish in a hospital bed. The devastating virus that had swept through Rigel IV had taken its toll on Jason, leaving him pale and listless. Darren's heart ached with worry, his mind racing with thoughts of their other husband, Will Rivers, who was still unaccounted for.
Darren had insisted they come to Bozeman City Hospital instead of the Rigellian Central Hospital. He didn't want to burden Joseph with their troubles or demand special treatment, even though the thought of Joey’s expertise and care gave him a sliver of hope.
Sitting by Jason's side, Darren clasped his husband's hand, his own trembling with a mixture of fear and love. He leaned in closer, pressing a gentle kiss to Jason's forehead. "Hang in there, my love," he whispered softly. "We'll get through this together. I won't leave your side."
Jason's eyelids fluttered weakly, a faint smile appearing on his lips. "I love you, Darren," he managed to murmur, his voice barely a whisper. "Don't worry about me... Will... he'll be okay."
Darren's heart swelled with affection for Jason's strength, even in his illness. He squeezed Jason's hand tightly, fighting back tears. "I love you too, Jason," he replied, his voice filled with emotion. "But I can't help worrying about Will. He's out there somewhere, and we don't know if he's safe."
A nurse approached the bed, her expression sympathetic. "Admiral Tel, we're doing everything we can for your husband," she assured Darren. "We've been overwhelmed with patients from the virus outbreak, but our staff are working tirelessly to provide the best care possible."
Darren nodded gratefully, his gratitude mixed with anxiety. "Thank you," he said hoarsely, “And it’s just Mr. Tel these days,” he half smiled. "Please, keep us updated on his condition. And if... if there's any news about Will, please let us know."
The nurse nodded, her eyes filled with compassion. "Of course, Mr. Tel. I understand your concerns. I'll do my best to keep you informed."
As the nurse left, Darren settled back into the uncomfortable chair beside Jason's bed. Time seemed to stretch endlessly, each passing minute a reminder of the uncertainty they faced. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver locket, holding it tightly in his hand.
"This locket contains photos of our wedding day," Darren whispered, his voice laced with nostalgia. "Remember how happy we were? The three of us, promising to stand by each other, through sickness and health."
Jason managed a weak smile, his eyes glimmering with memories. "I'll never forget that day," he replied softly. "And I'll fight with everything I have to make sure we have many more days like that."
Darren's eyes welled with tears, his voice catching in his throat. "You better fight, Jason Bush-Tel," he said, his tone filled with equal parts tenderness and determination. "Because I can't imagine my life without you. We have so much more love to share, so many more memories to create."
A wave of exhaustion washed over Jason, his eyes growing heavy. "I'm tired, Darren," he murmured, his voice barely audible. "But I promise... I promise I'll fight."
Darren leaned in closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "Rest now, my love," he said gently. "I'll be right here, holding your hand, until you're strong enough to fight again."
As Jason drifted off into a fitful sleep, Darren stayed by his side, his mind filled with a mixture of hope and fear. He closed his eyes briefly, silently sending a plea to the universe for strength and healing.
Hours turned into days, and each passing moment felt like an eternity. Darren hardly left Jason's side, his former Starfleet training instilling a sense of discipline and unwavering dedication. He watched as doctors and nurses moved in and out of the room, their faces etched with weariness and determination.
On the fourth day of Jason's hospitalisation, a knock on the door interrupted the quiet stillness. Darren looked up, his eyes meeting the tired gaze of Joe.
"Joe," Darren said, surprise mingling with relief. "What are you doing here?"
Joey entered the room, a mix of exhaustion and concern etched on his face. "I couldn't stay away any longer," he admitted, his voice filled with raw emotion. "I've been so worried about both of you…”
