Description Star Trek Chimera: Phase II
Season Five - Episode Three:

“When The Wrong Side Wins”

Dana Ryan, strolling through the serene beauty of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, is captivated by the stunning weather. The clear blue skies above create a picturesque backdrop, devoid of any clouds, enhancing the enchanting atmosphere. As she leisurely wanders through the park, her senses come alive, marvelling at the diverse array of flora and fauna that surround her.

Lost in her own world of appreciation, Dana suddenly hears a familiar voice, causing her to pause and listen intently. It's the voice of Dorna, someone she knows well and cherishes. Intrigued, she turns around, only to find Dorna standing there, his presence now made known. A gentle tap on her shoulder serves as a tender signal, drawing her attention towards him.

Their eyes meet, and a rush of emotions fills the air. In a moment that seems suspended in time, Dorna takes the opportunity to show his affection for Dana. With a graceful spin, he embraces her and seals their connection with a heartfelt kiss. The world around them seems to fade into the background, as if acknowledging the intensity of the moment.

This spontaneous display of affection speaks volumes about the bond they share. Their meeting in such a serene setting, amidst the natural wonders of Golden Gate Park, amplifies the significance of their connection. The tranquil ambiance of the park complements their tender encounter, creating a harmonious blend of nature's beauty and the blossoming romance between Dana and Dorna.

As they stand there, wrapped in each other's embrace, time stands still. The beauty of the park becomes an exquisite backdrop to their love story, enhancing the magic of their shared experience. The gentle breeze carries whispers of their affection, and the sun's warm rays seem to bless their union.

In this moment, Dana and Dorna find solace, love, and a deep connection in the heart of Golden Gate Park. The park becomes a witness to their love, a sanctuary where their spirits intertwine, and a place they will forever cherish as the beginning of their journey together.

In the midst of their intimate moment, Dana and Dorna find themselves immersed in each other's presence, seemingly disconnected from the bustling world around them. Engrossed in their connection, they take a moment to inquire about each other's days, seeking solace in their shared experiences.

Dorna, an ensign dedicated to his duties at Starfleet Command, recounts the challenges he faced throughout the morning. Despite his enthusiasm for his new posting, he expresses frustration in navigating the complexities of working with busy admiralty. Dorna laments that his unique sense of humor and vibrant personality often go unnoticed or misunderstood by those in higher positions.

Understanding the weight of Dorna's words, Dana empathises with his struggles and opens up about her own taxing day. As a field mentor of the Starfleet Academy's prestigious Red Squad branch, she reveals the difficulties she faces in mentoring and guiding the new cadets under her wing.

In this moment of vulnerability, Dorna reassures Dana that their working day is now over, urging her not to dwell on the challenges they faced. He reminds her of his unwavering support and offers her another kiss, a tender gesture symbolising his commitment to brightening her spirits.

As their lips meet, enveloped in the embrace of their shared affection, the tranquility of the park is interrupted by the jarring sound of the comm system warbling—an incoming transmission. The abrupt intrusion snaps Dana back to reality, causing her to realise that the current reality is merely an illusion, a carefully crafted holographic recreation of cherished memories from years ago.

Dana's heart sinks as she realises that the enchanting surroundings of Golden Gate Park and the presence of Dorna are nothing more than projections in the holodeck. The bittersweet truth dawns on her—this beautiful moment she had been sharing was a nostalgic trip down memory lane, a reminder of her time with Dorna shortly after their graduation from the Academy.

Though the realisation may be disheartening, Dana clings to the significance of these recreated memories. They serve as a testament to the depth of the connection and the enduring love she and Dorna once shared. While the holographic experience may have momentarily transported her to the past, it also serves as a reminder of the strength of the bond they once had, fuelling her resolve to create new memories and face future challenges head on, not letting the ghosts of her past take hold and rule her anxieties —but only if it were that simple.

In response to the interruption of the holodeck program, Dana swiftly pauses the simulation and answers the incoming transmission. To her surprise, it's Commander Jade Rollins, her first officer, whose voice now carries a newfound confidence after settling into her role over the past couple of weeks. Jade proceeds to provide a comprehensive report on the current situation unfolding on Rigel III, the influential hub of the Rigellian Government and the Rigellian Trade Commission, as well as the outcome of the recent election.

Curiosity engulfs Dana as she eagerly awaits news of the election results, speculating whether the victory was secured by the centralist party or the hard right wing party known as the Kelma. Intrigued by the potential ramifications, Dana instructs Jade to disclose the winner.

Regrettably, Jade delivers the news with a heavy heart—The Kelma party has triumphed with a sweeping majority, and Joovaa has been elected as the prime minister. Dana's heart sinks as she contemplates the implications this outcome will have for the New Federation and Starfleet. The Kelma party's primary objective revolves around limiting the influx of individuals entering the Rigel System while prioritising job opportunities for Rigellians, ensuring their own citizens have a fair chance at building a prosperous future, rather than accommodating alien races seeking refuge and new beginnings on Rigel.

Jade continues her report, divulging that Admiral Barin Troi specifically requests Dana's immediate contact. She reveals that the Kelma party wasted no time in reaching out to Starfleet, immediately posing obstacles and even suggesting the potential closure of Starbase Chimera. Additionally, they are demanding a reduction in Starfleet's presence within the sector, which further exacerbates the delicate situation.

Captain Dana Ryan recognises the gravity of the circumstances unfolding before her. The victory of the Kelma party signifies a significant challenge for the New Federation and Starfleet. Dana anticipates the difficulties that lie ahead as they navigate the shifting political landscape on Rigel III. The incoming communication from Admiral Troi signals the urgency of the matter, prompting Dana to brace herself for the complex negotiations and delicate diplomacy that lie ahead in order to preserve Starfleet's interests and maintain peace within the region.

*_*_*_*

Having left the holodeck, Captain Ryan retreats to her ready room, seeking solace and clarity amidst the chaos. She approaches the replicator and orders a cup of coffee, relishing its appearance before her. Sipping her drink, she then proceeds to her desk, which is covered with a multitude of PADDs, each containing valuable information and status reports pertaining to the perplexing case surrounding Admiral Dorna's death and the potential involvement of Nallin Dal—an enigma that continues to elude her, despite hours of meticulous analysis.

Taking a seat at her desk, Captain Ryan activates the holographic communication link, initiating a secure channel to Starbase 12 and her former mentor, Admiral Barin Troi. The holographic projection of Barin materialises before her, resembling a face-to-face encounter. Barin inquires about her well-being, and though Dana affirms that she is doing fine, she expresses her discomfort with the news of the Kelma party's victory in the election.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Barin admits that the circumstances are more than just uncomfortable. However, he reassures her that they have faced similar challenges in the past, recounting instances where the Rigellians had initially requested a reduction in Starfleet and New Federation efforts within the Rigel System, only to subsequently seek their assistance once again.

Dana notes that this time feels different, sensing a distinct shift in the Rigellians' approach. Barin concurs, finding it difficult to believe that the Kelma and Joovaa could successfully orchestrate Starfleet's withdrawal and leave the Rigellians to fend for themselves, especially considering the precarious geopolitical climate within the quadrant. He reveals that Starfleet Security estimates that if Starfleet were to pull out, the Rigel System would succumb to Tholian control in less than a year—a dire consequence indeed.

Barin further discloses that Joovaa has requested a meeting with him, Dana, and Starfleet on Rigel X, a bustling trading hub within the Rigel System, to initiate negotiations. Dana seeks clarity on the potential outcome of such a meeting. Barin stresses the necessity of maintaining a Starfleet presence, emphasising the deep interconnectivity between Starfleet and the Rigel Sector, making a complete withdrawal a time-consuming and arduous process.

He explains that he will join her on Rigel X in two days, where they will meet Joovaa and his newly elected colleagues, aiming to discern the true intentions behind their actions. They must determine if their demands are mere posturing or if they genuinely intend to follow through. Dana agrees and suggests bringing Commander Rollins and Lieutenant Zeta-Riker along for the meeting.

The communication concludes with Barin expressing his gratitude for Dana's understanding, as he, too, is discontent and uneasy with the current situation and the prospect of dismantling the fleet within the region. Together, they brace themselves for the forthcoming negotiations, seeking to unravel the truth behind the Kelma party's intentions and safeguard the stability and interests of the New Federation and Starfleet within the Rigel System.

Meanwhile, Lazaar finds himself navigating the bustling streets of Rigel V, having successfully completed an analysis of the newly installed phaser turrets within the capital. These turrets were a direct response to a request from the previous government leader, ensuring enhanced safety and security provided by Starfleet to the Rigellians. As he weaves through the crowds, making his way towards the transporter site to beam back to Chimera, Lazaar's tranquility is abruptly shattered.

Several imposing Rigellian individuals confront him, their hostility palpable. They provoke him, attempting to incite a fight by hurling insults and derogatory remarks. They scornfully tell him to return to his home planet of Gornar, asserting that Rigel V is no place for "lizard people" like him. They go as far as questioning his right to wear a Starfleet uniform, belittling the Gorn species as slow and dangerous.

Despite the escalating tension, Lazaar strives to maintain his composure, acutely aware of the potential consequences that may arise from retaliating against the belligerent Rigellians. He swiftly taps his combadge, urgently requesting an emergency transport, understanding that any aggression on his part, even in self-defence, would be viewed unfavourably by the New Federation and the Rigellian Trade Commission.

Commander Ash, responds to Lazaar's signal, prepared to initiate the beam-out process. However, before the transporter can complete its task, the situation takes an unexpected turn. Faced with the relentless aggression of the Rigellians, who evidently align themselves with the beliefs of the Kelma party, they resort to physically assaulting Lazaar, pelting him with rocks and stones. In a critical moment, one of them even attempts to throw a punch at him.

Unable to avoid defending himself any longer, Lazaar is left with no choice but to push his assailant to the ground, protecting himself from further harm or any harm that he may cause to the Rigellian. In that instant, the transporter beam envelops him, whisking him away to the safety of Chimera.

After materialising within the confines of the Starbase’s transporter room, Lazaar promptly makes his way to the command centre to ensure his well-being and report the incident to Captain Ryan.

*_*_*_*

After his arrival in the command centre, Lieutenant Trath is met with immediate concern from his fellow officers, Lieutenants Larallis and Marsland. They fuss over him, anxiously enquiring about his well-being and whether the Rigellians managed to inflict any injuries. Appreciating their care, Lazaar expresses his gratitude to Commander Ash for the swift emergency transport that prevented the situation from escalating further. However, before Ash can respond, Captain Dana Ryan emerges from her ready room, wearing a stern expression on her face.

Observing the seriousness of the situation, Captain Ryan summons Lazaar to her ready room, indicating the need for a thorough debriefing regarding the incident. Recognising the importance of understanding the details surrounding the altercation, she desires a comprehensive account from Lazaar to assess the severity of the encounter and determine the appropriate course of action.

With a mix of anticipation and trepidation, Lieutenant Trath follows Captain Ryan into her ready room, aware that this debriefing will play a pivotal role in shaping the subsequent actions of the crew and the Starbase in response to the hostile encounter on Rigel V.

Dana takes a seat behind her desk, a wave of anger visible on her face as she begins to question Lazaar, seemingly holding him accountable for the Rigellians' attack. Lazaar, standing before her, recounts the events that transpired—how he was returning to the designated beam-out coordinates after successfully inspecting the new phaser turrets. He explains that a group of Rigellians, clearly aligned with the Kelma party's ideology, subjected him to a barrage of verbal abuse. Left with no other choice, he resorted to defending himself when one of the Rigellians attempted to physically assault him. Lazaar emphasises that the entire incident unfolded within a matter of minutes.

As Lazaar relays the details, Dana's countenance softens, realising the weight of her initial response. She offers a sincere apology for her earlier demeanour, acknowledging that it was unfair to place blame on Lazaar. She informs him of Joovaa's victory in the election and explains that his encounter was not an isolated incident. Two other confrontations between alien races and Rigellians aligned with the Kelma party have already been reported, resulting in orders for the outsiders to leave the planet and return to their respective origins.

Lazaar expresses concern over the potential escalation of tensions, recognising the possibility that Starfleet's presence in the Rigel System may soon be required to act as protectors for those visiting the area. Dana concurs, suggesting that if Joovaa had his way, he would likely close the borders to non-Rigellians, a decision that would have grave consequences. She explains that the Rigel System is one of the most densely populated star systems in the region, home to tens of millions of individuals from non-native races who have made it their home.

In agreement with Lazaar's assessment, Dana provides insight into Admiral Troi's plan to meet with Joovaa on Rigel X the following day. She acknowledges that the meeting will undoubtedly prove challenging, especially now that one of her officers, Lazaar, has been involved in an altercation with hostile Rigellians aligned with the Kelma party. The incident adds an additional layer of complexity to the already delicate negotiations ahead.

*_*_*_*

Captain Dana Ryan, Commander Jade Rollins, and Lieutenant Gale Zeta-Riker arrive on Rigel X, greeted by the picturesque sight of snow-covered landscapes in contrast to the bustling industrial activity surrounding them. The planet serves as a hub for numerous trading outposts and hosts an intricate infrastructure, enabling visitors to engage in trade with one another. The trade complex before them holds historical significance, as it was the very site where Captain Jonathan Archer and the crew of the NX-01 Enterprise first made contact with the Rigellians in the early 2160s—an event that laid the foundation for the enduring relationship between Earth, the Rigellians, and the later Federation.

Captain Dana acknowledges the symbolic significance of their presence on this planet, recognising that they have returned to where it all essentially began for the Rigellians and the people of Earth, ultimately leading to the formation of the Federation. As they exchange thoughts on this matter, Admiral Barin Troi materialises alongside them, beaming down from his orbiting shuttle. The Admiral greets Dana, Jade, and Gale, joining them on this crucial mission.

Curious about Barin's experience in his new role as the chief operations officer for the Rigel Sector, Jade enquires about his well-being. Barin admits that he is settling into the position reasonably well. However, he expresses his displeasure at the prospect of negotiating with right-wing governments and grappling with the ideological challenges that may ultimately result in Starfleet and the New Federation being forced out of the region. The delicate situation at hand weighs heavily on his mind, knowing the difficult path that lies ahead in preserving the principles and interests of the Federation.

The group stands united on Rigel X, acutely aware of the responsibility they bear in navigating the complex political landscape and engaging in negotiations with the Kelma party's government. The snowy beauty of the planet serves as a stark contrast to the gravity of the task they face, setting the stage for a pivotal chapter in the ongoing relationship between the Rigellians, Starfleet, and the New Federation.

*_*_*_*

Seated at the negotiation table within the Rigellian trade complex, Prime Minister Joovaa, a Kalar exudes a toxic aura, his physical appearance reflecting the hardships and ruthless tactics that propelled him to power. Tall, but slightly overweight, his appearance bears witness to a difficult life and a tumultuous ascent to the position of authority. Joovaa's campaign was built on a foundation of deceit, spreading lies about his opponents to sway the deprived Rigellians into voting for him. He dangled the promise of economic security, benefits, and other incentives, all of which were baseless and impossible to fulfil without assistance from the centralist party they had just defeated.

Beside Joovaa, three equally unscrupulous ministers flank him, all of whom have similarly manipulated their way into their seats of power. On the opposite side of the table, Captain Dana Ryan, Admiral Barin Troi, Lieutenant Gale Zeta-Riker, and Commander Jade Rollins brace themselves for the arduous negotiation ahead.

Dana struggles to maintain politeness in the face of Joovaa's presence, but acknowledges his position as the prime minister of the Rigellian people and grants him the respect he is due. With no time for pleasantries, Joovaa cuts to the chase, declaring his desire for Starfleet to leave the Rigel System. He cites xenophobic reasons, emphasising his intent to restore the system to its former state, prioritising the Rigellians over other races seeking to reside there.

Barin, representing Starfleet and the New Federation, voices the reality of the situation. He explains that a complete withdrawal of Starfleet would take a minimum of four years to accomplish. Should they depart, they would leave nothing behind—no installations, starbases, spacedocks, weapons platforms, ships, or even the crucial SWIFT transporter network and defences that currently safeguard the Rigel System.

Joovaa, seemingly unfazed, confidently asserts that he has no concerns about Starfleet pulling out and taking their "toys and trinkets" with them. He dismisses the need for Starfleet's ships and weapons, insisting that the Rigellians can defend themselves without their assistance. Dana expresses her skepticism, finding it hard to believe that Joovaa could maintain such confidence without the support of Starfleet.

Joovaa questions Dana, posing the scenario of Starfleet's withdrawal and inquiring if that would mean the Rigel System is no longer considered a New Federation protectorate. Barin interjects, highlighting that such an event would compel the New Federation Council to hold a vote on whether or not to retain Rigel as a member. He candidly states that it is highly likely the council would vote against maintaining Rigel's membership.

Dana builds upon Barin's statement, underscoring the significant consequences of Rigel once again leaving the New Federation. She explains that if that were to happen, the New Federation and Starfleet would only respond to calls for help if it aligns with the best interests of the New Federation and its allies. Otherwise, the Rigellians would have to face any challenges alone, without the support of the New Federation and its resources.

Commander Jade Rollins adds her insight, pointing out that the Rigellian fleet is outdated and ill-equipped to defend against threats such as the Tholians or any other power seeking to seize control of the system. As the discussion reaches a critical juncture, Joovaa takes a moment to contemplate his response. However, before he can provide an answer, one of his ministers leans over and whispers something into his ear, prompting Joovaa to request a recess in order to gather his thoughts.

The negotiation hangs in limbo as the recess is granted, allowing Joovaa and his ministers to confer and consider the implications of the arguments put forth by Captain Dana Ryan, Admiral Barin Troi, and Commander Jade Rollins. The outcome of their internal discussions may greatly impact the direction of the negotiations and shape the future relationship between the Rigellians, the New Federation, and Starfleet.

*_*_*_*

During the recess, Captain Dana Ryan and Admiral Barin Troi take the opportunity to catch up and share a few moments together whilst Jade and Gale get something to eat. Barin enquires about Jade's adjustment to his former position as first officer of Chimera, and Dana expresses her satisfaction, albeit mentioning the ongoing challenge of finding a replacement science officer for Jade. She continues to handle both roles, pulling double duty in the meantime.

Barin offers his assistance, assuring Dana that he will look into the matter after the negotiations with Joovaa conclude. He suggests that he may have someone in mind who could fill the vacant science officer position, alleviating some of the burden on Jade's shoulders. Their conversation takes a more reflective turn as Barin mentions how much he misses Admiral Dorna, Dana's late partner. He fondly recalls Dorna's ability to confront individuals like Joovaa and the Kelma Party, suggesting that his presence would have been invaluable in dealing with the current situation. Dana finds solace in Barin's words, appreciating the reminder of their strong partnership. She acknowledges Barin's own capabilities, reassuring him that they continue to make a formidable team despite him now wearing admiral’s pips on his tunic.

As their conversation unfolds, one of Joovaa's ministers interrupts, signalling the end of the recess and requesting their return to the negotiation table. With the recess coming to a close, Dana and Barin mentally prepare themselves to rejoin the intense discussions, aware of the critical decisions that lie ahead and the potential ramifications for the future relationship between the New Federation, Starfleet, and the Rigellians.

*_*_*_*

A notable shift occurs in Joovaa's approach during the negotiations. His demeanour softens, and he reaches out to Admiral Barin Troi and Captain Dana Ryan, offering a brief moment of honesty. Joovaa explains that he and the Kelma party won the election on the promise of restoring the Rigellians to their former glory, aiming to reduce their dependency on organisations like Starfleet and the New Federation. He expresses respect for Starfleet and the New Federation, acknowledging their role in safeguarding the Rigellians from wars and attacks and making the Rigel System a safe place. However, Joovaa asserts that the Rigellians are not a backward or helpless people, claiming that they have the ability to thrive and make their own decisions without the rules and influence of the New Federation. Despite this, he desires to maintain positive relationships with Starfleet and the New Federation and proposes a compromise: allowing his party, the Kelma, to oversee Starfleet's influence in the sector.

In response, Admiral Barin highlights the nature of Starfleet as a democratic organisation run by admirals, a council, functioning as both a scientific, exploration and peacekeeping entity with its own established structure. He explains that opening up Starfleet's operations to Joovaa and the new Rigellian government would create instability, as they could not allow an alien government to control certain aspects of Starfleet. Barin emphasises the impossibility of accepting Joovaa's proposal, given the inherent challenges and potential risks it would entail.

Joovaa remains firm, presenting his offer as the only option on the table. With that, he bids Captain Dana Ryan, Admiral Barin Troi, Lieutenant Gale Zeta-Riker, and Commander Jade Rollins a cool and distant farewell before departing from the negotiation room. The frosty atmosphere leaves the future of the negotiations uncertain, as the two parties grapple with conflicting desires and find themselves at an impasse.

Gale and Jade react swiftly, dismissing Joovaa's proposal as ludicrous and calling attention to his overestimation of his own power in attempting to control a portion of Starfleet. They firmly assert that such a proposition is beyond his station and not feasible. Dana aligns with their sentiment, acknowledging the impossibility of Joovaa's request. However, she finds herself contemplating the potential consequences that may arise if Starfleet were to withdraw from the Rigel System. The weight of the decision lingers in her thoughts, as she weighs the impact it would have on the region and its inhabitants.

Barin shares in the contemplation, his mind grappling with the idea that after nearly two hundred years, Starfleet may indeed be forced to leave the Rigel System. The mere notion sends a cold shiver down his spine, realising the immense implications and the potential loss of the New Federation's influence in the region.

Amidst their discussions, the Starfleet officers receive an incoming message from one of Joovaa's ministers, delivering an ultimatum. They are given a two-week deadline to decide whether they accept Joovaa's offer of commanding Starfleet in the Rigel System or face expulsion from the region. Additionally, the minister decrees the immediate reassignment of Lieutenant Lazaar Trath, citing his altercation with the Rigellians earlier as an intolerable incident that cannot go unnoticed. The demand for Lazaar's removal from the Rigel System highlights the increasing tension and the escalated consequences of the conflict.

The gravity of the situation intensifies, as the officers are confronted with a challenging ultimatum and the reassignment of one of their own. The countdown begins, leaving them with limited time to consider their options and make decisions that will shape the future of Starfleet's presence in the Rigel System and its relationship with the Rigellians.

Captain's Log, supplemental:

It has been a challenging two weeks since our encounter with Prime Minister Joovaa and his ultimatum regarding Starfleet's presence in the Rigel Sector. The options presented to us are either allowing Joovaa some level of control over Starfleet, which fundamentally contradicts the principles upon which Starfleet and the New Federation were founded, or facing complete removal from the region. As I reflect on this situation, I find myself grappling with conflicting thoughts regarding the potential consequences and the difficult decisions that lie ahead.

While a part of me considers if there could be any merit in Joovaa's suggestion for him to lead the fleet in this region, I am keenly aware that it goes against the core tenets of our organisation. The principles of non-interference and respect for the sovereignty of other worlds and governments are the bedrock of the Prime Directive. To compromise these principles would undermine the very essence of Starfleet's mission.

As I dictate this log entry, Admiral Barin Troi is working closely with Starfleet Security and Intelligence to explore potential avenues for assistance within the constraints of the Prime Directive. We are seeking information on Joovaa and his party, hoping to uncover any evidence that might warrant a re-election. However, we walk a delicate line, as interfering in the democratic process risks further complications and jeopardises the ideals we hold dear.

Instances like this arise from time to time, where right-wing parties and politicians ascend to power. Sometimes we must navigate through these situations, allowing events to unfold naturally, while at other times, we are compelled to take action. Yet, the ambiguity of the current circumstances leaves me uncertain about the boundaries and constraints that encircle us. It remains unclear whether our hands are tied, and if we must ultimately depart from the system I have come to affectionately call home.

As the days pass, the weight of responsibility grows heavier. The fate of Starfleet's presence in the Rigel System and our adherence to the principles that define us hang in the balance. Difficult choices lie ahead, and the impact of our decisions will reverberate through the region and shape the future of our relationship with the Rigellians.

*_*_*_*

With the deadline looming, Captain Dana Ryan and Admiral Barin Troi return to Rigel X to meet with Prime Minister Joovaa and deliver their response to his ultimatum. As they wait in anticipation, their minds are filled with the weight of their words, hoping that Starfleet and the New Federation's stance on the situation is the right one.

Joovaa enters the room, taking his seat and embarking on a lengthy speech, expressing his pride in his people and his election victory. He asserts that he will remain steadfast in his position regardless of Starfleet and the New Federation's decision.

Barin, representing Starfleet and the New Federation, delivers their response to Joovaa's ultimatum. He calmly states that they have decided to decline his offer of taking control of the fleet in the Rigel System. However, instead of immediately discussing Starfleet's plans for withdrawal, Barin surprises Joovaa by passing him a padd containing extensive evidence of Joovaa's conduct during the election. The information highlights instances of voter fraud, suppression, and various unethical tactics employed by Joovaa to secure his position of power. Barin reveals that Starfleet has also uncovered Joovaa's personal secrets, including his infidelity and the existence of a secret family living in impoverished conditions on Ongollia Prime. Barin emphasise that this information can be discreetly passed to the Rigellian media without any direct involvement from Starfleet, effectively discrediting Joovaa and his party.

Acknowledging that this approach goes against the Prime Directive, Barin accepts the moral consequences and declares his readiness to risk his own career to ensure that Joovaa and his party do not remain in power. Joovaa initially believes Barin is bluffing, but the potential repercussions convince him not to take the chance. He confronts Barin, enquiring about his proposed solution to resolve the situation.

Barin, firm in his resolve, instructs Joovaa to stand down and admit that there was a miscount in the election, acknowledging that the centralist party was the true winner. Reluctantly, Joovaa agrees to comply, but not without issuing a threat, warning Barin that he and the Kelma Party will not be silenced.

The room is filled with tension and uncertainty as the outcome of the encounter hangs in the balance. The resolution of this high-stakes negotiation will not only determine the fate of Starfleet's presence in the Rigel System but also shape the future of the Rigellian government and the relationship between the New Federation and the Rigellians.

Captain Dana Ryan and Admiral Barin Troi witness Joovaa's agreement to Barin's terms, prompting him to immediately instruct his people on Rigel III to declare the miscount in the election. However, Joovaa insists that Lieutenant Lazaar Trath must also leave the region as part of the agreement. Despite her anger, Dana reluctantly accepts these conditions, knowing that this sacrifice is necessary to ensure Starfleet's continued presence in the region.

As Dana contemplates how to break the news to Lazaar, the realisation sinks in that his removal from his post will ultimately secure Starfleet's position. With a heavy heart, she recognises the personal toll this decision will have on Lazaar and the impact it will have on their relationship. Meanwhile, Joovaa departs from the negotiation room, carrying the weight of his failed power grab and shamefully retreating with his metaphorical tail between his legs.

Having thwarted Joovaa's rise to power, Captain Dana Ryan and Admiral Barin Troi return to Starbase Chimera on Rigel V. They gather themselves, preparing to deliver the news to Lieutenant Lazaar Trath, knowing that this revelation will bring significant changes and challenges to the Gorn officer and the crew crew. The weight of the situation hangs heavily in the air as they navigate the delicate task of informing Lazaar about the circumstances and the sacrifice he must make for the greater good of Starfleet and the New Federation in the Rigel System.

*_*_*_*

After breaking the news to Lazaar, Captain Dana Ryan and the crew gather in the shuttlebay to bid farewell to their departing colleague. Lazaar expresses his gratitude to Dana and the crew for their acceptance and support during his time on Chimera. As a Gorn, and despite having grown up on Earth, he has always struggled to fit in among people who are so different from him, but his experience on the starbase has made him feel truly valued and part of a family that has formed over the years.

Understanding the reasons behind his reassignment, Lazaar expresses his appreciation to Admiral Barin Troi for promoting him to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and assigning him as the admiral's attaché on Starbase 12. He recognises this new role as an opportunity for growth and further contribution to Starfleet.

The crew gathers around Lazaar, offering their well wishes and expressing their gratitude for his contributions during his time on Chimera. As the shuttle departs from Rigel V and Starbase Chimera, Lazaar gazes down at the planet he once called home, knowing deep down that he carries the hope of returning someday.

As Lazaar's journey takes him to a new chapter in his career, the crew of Chimera reflects on the bond they have forged with their departing Gorn tactical officer. They are left with a mix of emotions, bidding farewell to a valued member of their team while also looking ahead to the challenges and adventures that await them in the Rigel System and beyond, cautiously optimistic that the situation with Joovaa and the Kelma’s brief control of the Rigellian Government is behind them once and for all.

And so, the story of Captain Dana Ryan and the crew of Starbase Chimera continues, shaped by the ever-changing circumstances and their unwavering commitment to the principles of Starfleet and the New Federation. The end of one chapter marks the beginning of another, as they navigate the complex galaxy, facing new trials and triumphs on their mission to explore, discover, and protect.

*_*_*_*

As Lazaar settles in on Starbase 12, Admiral Dorna heads to his office, prepared to inform Starfleet Command about his actions on Rigel X and his violation of the Prime Directive. He is acutely aware that he deliberately interfered in another society's affairs, including their election process. This goes against the principles upheld by the New Federation and Starfleet. Despite his personal disagreement with the outcome of the Rigellian elections, he realises that he should have respected it and accepted the consequences.

While walking through the gardens near the command centre of Starbase 12, Admiral Dorna is approached by a mysterious figure. This shadowy individual assures him that everything has been taken care of and advises him that there is no need to contact Starfleet Command, as the repercussions of his actions have already been addressed. The figure also reassures Dorna that, at least for now, his career is not in jeopardy.

Dorna recognises the woman as the same person he thought he had parted ways with years ago, someone who had promised not to interfere with time and its natural progression. In response, he expresses his surprise at her presence and her apparent breach of that promise. However, she explains that certain moments in time require subtle adjustments to ensure the natural development and safety of the New Federation. This particular situation was one of those critical junctures, and she had to intervene to safeguard not only the interests of the New Federation, but that of this Quadrant of the galaxy.

As the woman departs, Admiral Dorna reflects on the potential consequences if she hadn't intervened. He finds solace in the knowledge that her actions prevented Joovaa's continued reign from causing dire repercussions for the Rigel System, Starfleet, and the New Federation.
