Star Trek: Chimera - Season ThreeEpisode One: “Divisions in Unity” - Part One of Two...
Star Trek Chimera returns for a third season following hot on the heals of the final episode of it’s sister series, Star Trek: Into The Wilderness.
Taking place two years after the events of the season Two Finale, the crew of the Chimera Starbase find themselves in interesting times.
With the Federation stronger than ever, the Klingon and Romulan/Vulcan Empire unified the Starfleet being more inclusive than ever, Chimera is certainly a more colourful and diverse a place than ever before!
A Starfleet shuttle containing Commander Beth May, Lt. Commander Mendon and Engineer Marik approaches The Rigel System. All three officers are excited about their respective new postings on Starbase Chimera.
As the shuttle approaches three Romulan Warbirds de-cloak and open hailing frequencies.
Mendon is initially terrified at the sight of the huge ships hovering off the shuttle’s bow however, May reassures him that there shouldn’t be anything to worry about, that the New Federation are at peace with the Romulans and are considered allies.
It’s clear that the recent galactic political changes are still having massive repercussions as well as engendering fear and concern from those who are a part of this new alliance.
Sub-Commander Devi appears on the shuttle’s viewscreen, he welcomes the trio to the Rigel System and steps aside to present Admiral Bateson. Morgan makes light of the current situation and advises that he is aboard to escort his new officers to the base. Telling them to ‘follow them in’ -Bateson transmits the coordinates for Chimera.
Relieved, yet surprised that three warbirds are here to escort them in, Mendon stands down and relaxes as the huge warships come about and make their way in to the Rigel System...
Meanwhile on Chimera, Rivers, who has now acclimated to his role as first Officer is mid way through a briefing with the senior staff. He explains the recent changes to the command staff and their new roles on the base and congratulates Jason Bush on his new role as Civilian Chief Operations Officer of the base. Telling him that Jason’s late father would be proud of him,the crew offer Jason a round of applause and congratulate him on his new assignment following the destruction of the ASDB building.
Rivers goes on to explain that they have dignitaries from across all four quadrants of the galaxy at Chimera for a diplomatic conference, that all department heads need to be on high alert. Reports have come in from Command that there has been an increase of attacks on outer lying New Federation worlds. Starfleet believe that these attacks are as a result of the union of the Federation, Klingon and Romulan empires. They also believe that these are attacks to provoke the New Federation into war with races that feel somewhat left out of this new alliance.
Following the briefing, the crew head out to their respective posts to ensure security is tightened. Chimera is far from the protection of the New Federation Fleet however, they are close to the Romulan Fleet. With this in mind, The Romulans have posted three warbirds to patrol the Rigel System...
Bateson, May, Mendon and Marik beam down to the surface of Rigel IV and arrive at the newly refurbished space port, “Well, that was quite an arrival” Beth May expresses to Bateson who appears tired of keeping ‘face’ to the Romulans.
He explains why the truce between their people is holding, Bateson still feels uncomfortable and echoes a renowned 23rd Century Klingon Chancellor, telling his new officers that their generation is going to have the hardest time living with these changes.
The pair make their way to the Space Port Operations Centre where they are greeted by acting assistant chief flight officer, Cadet Will Rivers. He welcomes them to Chimera and asks Bateson if he’s heard the recent news.
Rivers explains that the base is now on high alert as a fleet of Breen Warships have been detected at the outer most reaches of the neighbouring star system.
Cutting the tour short, Bateson makes his way to the Chimera Command Centre.
Arriving at the command centre, Bateson finds Rivers discussing the Breen Fleet with the commanders of the Romulan ships, Bateson cuts in after hearing the majority of the conversation and advises that he will take the Bozeman along with the Romulan warbirds out to the edge of the Rigel System.
As the ranking officer, Bateson advises he’ll be commanding the mission. Surprisingly [to Bateson] the Romulan commanders agree and await the Bozeman’s arrival.
He asks Rivers, Commander May and Lieutenant Commander Mendon to join him aboard the Bozeman...
The Bozeman leaves from the newly refurbished space port with Lieutenant Artim at the helm -it’s his first time taking the ship up through the atmosphere and into orbit. Both Bateson and Rivers are somewhat nervous however the young lieutenant makes light work of piloting the ship through the atmosphere to the rendezvous point with the Romulans.
After a brief com briefing with the Romulan commanders, Morgan gives the order to proceed. He reaffirms his seniority over the mission and makes it clear that they will not engage the Breen ships.
The four ships approach the Breen Amanda, which is lead by several human ‘activists’ that appose the New Federation. Bateson warns them off and orders them to leave the area however, the leaders quite rightly remind Bateson that they are in unclaimed space and should not be warned off. Begrudgingly accepting this after being reminded that they have done no wrong, the armada begins to move off -that is until one of the Romulan ships opens fire...
2277
Precisely one year to the day before the Bozeman disappeared in to the temporal anomaly that trapped the ship and her crew in a time loop for almost a century, the then Captain Morgan and his crew found themselves in a very similar situation...
High above the omicron filled skies of Mengan IV, the Soyuz-Class, USS Bozeman found themselves conducting a planetary survey of a pre-warp civilisation.
The Mengan’s were at war, it was the war that brought the Bozeman here and to Starfleet and the Federation’s attention.
Tasked with a social-planetary survey of understanding why the population was at war, Bateson watched in horror as the warring sides tore chunks out of each other.
Bateson strongly disagreed with their mission. Taking counsel in Gabriel Bush, his first officer, Bateson questioned why they were really here.
Making quite the astute observation, Gabe remarked that the planet contains massive amounts of dilithium.
Morgan believes that that’s why they’re really here. That they are here to survey the planet for when it’s inhabitants have wiped themselves out.
Later that evening, Morgan meets with his chief medical officer, Allissa Mendlor, he expresses that he wants to do more however, Mendlor reminds the captain of the Prime Directive. Despite the directive, Allissa finds all of this hard to stomach. She expresses that the survey data suggests that the Mengan’s are aware of alien life, they just haven’t had a breakthrough in warp technology yet. She explains that they have encountered other species.
Armed with this information, Bateson holds a meeting with his senior staff to discuss the options of assisting the Menagans...
2404
The Bozeman-B has taken heavy damage, most of the ship has been crippled and Bateson now finds himself moments from giving the order to abandon ship.
Beth has been injured, Doctor Taggart finds herself on the bridge as the ship takes another crippling blow.
Steadying himself, Bateson rises from the command chair as Mendon reads out a litany of damaged systems before finishing his damage report with the grave warning that the warp core is breaching.
With no other option, Bateson orders the crew to proceed to the escape pods and abandon the Bozeman...
To be continued...
