Description
Star Trek: ChimeraLieutenant Commander Beth May - Strategic Operations Officer, Starbase 134.
Daughter of renowned Starfleet engineers Maria and Elias May, Beth was destined for the stars, born aboard the Federation Starship George Washington in 2351. When she was five-year-old, Maria became pregnant with her brother Roland, the family relocated to Earth due to growing conflicts with both the Cardassian Union and Talarian Republic. After two years of pre-law at Stanford University, at the age of 20 Beth entered Starfleet Academy, eschewing the engineering and technical sciences after showing a more keen interest in the intricacies of tactical strategies and the workings of Federation and Starfleet justice.
Excelling in her studies, a keen debater and savvy with student politics, Beth was soon picked in her freshman year to join Red Squad, the elite cadet squad who received special classes and advanced field training. However, when the squad was embroiled in the Leyton Coup of 2372, Beth grew uncomfortable with the overzealousness of many of her squadmates. Resigning her place with the team, feeling guilty for her perceived condoning of Leyton’s actions, Beth focused on her studies, which ultimately saved her life as she was not with Red Squad when they were killed aboard the ill-fated U.S.S. Valiant.
After a year of deployment during the Dominion War, Beth graduated in the top 5% of her class, before enrolling in postgraduate studies for both advanced tactical training, earning her law degree and passing the bar exam with honours. For these achievements, she was commissioned as a lieutenant, junior grade and posted to the Nebula-class Starship Reka Pechora as a junior tactical officer.
During her time aboard the Reka Pechora, on an extended patrol on the edges of Federation space, Beth came to the attention of the Starfleet Criminal Investigative Service when she uncovered a smuggling operation between several senior officers and the personnel of Star Station Oscar. Although her deductions made her something of a pariah on-board, Beth did her duty and continued to serve for several more months before being approached by SCIS.
Joining them as a junior agent, her tactical skills and legal know-how made her a formidable detective with an impressive case-clearance rate. However, her personal life also flourished as the professional relationship with her mentor deepened into that of lovers. Unfortunately, four months after discovering that she was pregnant, Beth and her mentor were caught in an ambush during a stakeout, resulting in the death of her partner and the loss of her unborn child. The pain of that loss haunts Beth daily, as she wonders about the life she missed out on.
Her continued service with SCIS meant she was posted all across the Federation to colonies and starbases, occasionally on a starship when warranted. Eventually after twenty-years of chasing criminals, Beth took a sideways promotion to the Office of the Inspector-General, an appointment that brings her to Starbase 134 when assigned by Admiral Jellico to look into allegations of wrongdoing by the command staff. Kind-hearted, strong and passionate despite her personal losses and experience, her fierce intelligence and incredible capability combined with a sharp sense of humour make her more than capable of holding her own; be it the Starfleet Admiralty or the Rigellian Governing Board.
Commander Beth May is Introduced in season two of Star Trek: Chimera Remastered and ‘played by’ Laura Linney.
