On Nov. 2, '43 we paid a return call to Rabaul. This time the target was shiping in Simpson Harbor, and the load was 500 lb. bombs. It was on this mission that 8th Sq. Comm., Maj. Raymond Wilkins, would recieve the Group's first Cong. Medal of Honor - posthumously.Related content

A great shot for sure. There sure were some hellacious battles fought over Rabaul. I couldn't imagine what it was like. My VF-17 friend said unless you've done it there really is no way of knowing what it was like. He said air combat happened so fast he didn't know what was happening half the time. One time he landed to find his Corsair all shot up full of holes and a chewed up propeller. He hadn't seen a thing and had no idea he was even fired at during the battle. The thought of how close he came to buying it made him vomit.
