Sycorax, the yellow witch, holds the androgynous being Ariel captive, forcing Ariel to do her will. Ariel, depicted as the Vitruvian Man, represents the ingenuity and magic of the human species.
Caliban the snake is wrapped around his mother Sycorax. Caliban sees Ariel as a prize to be had, and a means to proliferate himself.
The after images (dark image of Sycorax and the larger transparent Ariel) hint at Sycorax's banishment to come and Ariel's desire for freedom.
