Even though Thorn (Vektren) is intelligent, honest, and loyal, his self-perception has been broken down, meaning that he doesn't feel at ease unless he cares about someone who is making their purpose of his own. Thorn also wishes that he can see himself as a "somebody" other than a slave. Poor Thorn.
