Description
Developed in the mid-1970s to replace semi-automatic and automatic rifles that had been in service since the 1940s, the FA-MAS M.78 rifle was designed to chamber the new 5.7x40mm small caliber high velocity (SCHV) cartridge. Initially issued with a 25-round magazine and later with a 30-round magazine, the FA-MAS rifle's first combat debut would be before its official acceptance by the Sieuxerrian Army in the 1978 abdication of Napoleon V following the Sieuxerrian-Tyrannian nuclear conflict in 1978.
It uses a unique lever-delayed blowback action and can achieve an automatic rate of fire of 1,000 rounds per minute. It has an automatic and semi-automatic mode, which can be selected by the paddle lever inside the trigger guard. A safety switch is located on the rear of the rifle behind the magazine, it prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin, allowing the rifle to be safely dropped without worry of an accidental discharge.
Used mostly by the Sieuxerrian Armed Forces, it was also purchased by the Maracaibean Army and Portcullian Army for their mechanized infantry. Over 1.5 million rifles have been produced to date with low-rate production ongoing to replace worn out rifles.
Variants of the rifle are as follows:
FA-MAS M.78 Fusil: The standard issue rifle as accepted in 1978.
FA-MAS M.78/80 Fusil: Equipped with an integrated scope which itself is a copied variant of the Tyrannian SUIT scope used on the L1A1 rifles, the M.78/80 was issued to squad leaders and marksman personnel for accurate fire at extended ranges.
FA-MAS M.78/85 Fusil: The first improvement to the base design, the M.78/85 has an improved handguard for better ergonomics as well as refinements to the action. All models produced after this point would be of the M.78/85 model, as well as a number of older rifles updated to this standard.
FA-MAS M.78/85 Carabine: Designed for use with auxiliary troops who did not need the extra weight and size of the standard rifle, the M.78/85 Carabine has barrel shorted, as such removing its rifle grenade ability, and also removing the bipod.
FA-MAS M.78/85 Commando: Not accepted in regular service the commando has a shortened carry handle and a forward grip. Designed for CQB use the rifle was purchased in small amounts by various special forces groups.
FA-MAS M.78/85 Revision: A remodel for the 21st century, the M.78/85 Revision has a redesigned carry handle and rails for mounting optics. The bipod is also redesigned as it is moved further back on the rifle. A number were purchased for rapid deployable units.
FA-MAS M.78/10 Valorise: Taking from Revision, the Valorise adds a front iron sight for a rear iron sight if no optics are added. On the upper reciever above the barrel rails are added to allow for the addition of a laser sight or flashlight device. Valorise was produced brand new, replacing the older M.78/85 rifle models to that point.
FA-MAS M.78/10 Felin: With much of the same upgrades of the Valorise, the Felin is designed to be used with the SAGEM SWORD T&D optic as apart of the Felin Future Warfare system.
FA-MAS M.78/16 VC: And upgrade of the Carabine, it was purchased in small amounts, however many are rebuilt M.78/85 Carabine models.
FA-MAS M.78/16 VCO: An upgrade of the Commando, the VCO was again only purchased in small amounts.
