I just played the new security breach ruin and it was phenomenal, and i thought that william was glitchtrap, until i realized it was the mimic all along. Now that william is presumbably finally gone for good, the mimic witnessed Afton commit the original murders of 5 children in the 1980s. Taking a strange inspiration from this, The Mimic continues Afton's rampage decades after he was killed by the combined efforts of Henry Emily and Michael Afton, as it essentially wishes to 'become' him. Now he takes that role and becomes the new man behind the slaughter.
