“I was alone in Rome, I didn't speak Italian, I had no money, I was carrying a stressful production and I didn't feel connected to the rest of humanity…I didn't know what I was going to do with my life. During one night I had a very high fever and to make matters worse, a nightmare about a robot that emerged from its ashes in the middle of a ball of fire came to my mind, coming for me. When I woke up the next morning, I began to draw that dream on a piece of paper I found in the hotel, and at the same time I sketched out a story for it. It was very easy for me to project myself onto this character. I had nothing else." The first sketch I did showed a metal skeleton severed at the waist, crawling across a tiled floor, using a large kitchen knife to push himself forward while reaching out with the other hand. I then sold the script to a production company for a dollar, with the only condition of being able to direct the film. The rest is history”
