Description
Further character developments for my WIP comic book Squad, as well as some developments of the squad armor that Sergeant Phyllis hates so much to don. "You get shot, you get shot! What is there to armor about?" she argues. "It's essential in the first part of the story," I said. "Pssssssh #>X<*%!" She hisses.I'm using Sarge Phyllis as the base for the armor design for all the characters. I just so love to draw her!
Happy to say that the story is going well. However it has taken quite a grim tone, so I've been thinking about upping the target audience age a bit in the visual side. Thus I've been playing around with maybe ditching the previously done big-head, child-like proportions and making them a tad more adult. Challenging, but I kind of like this new evolution. I wager there'd be more evolutions to come for the designs while I write the story, but I think I'll stick to this style for now.

Another epic epicness....seriously,epic X3...Sarge KITTEH aka Phyllis at it again, many models, even if small copypaste yet the design's completely different.. Can't get enough of her <3
Halo?,,a tiny bit but hey,HALO is futuristic, this is more war like, even if some weapons are kinda future like or not... ..Also,BUNNEH is theret oo <3..great to know he's back at your art .,lovely jobs on the posings and colours in the bottom pics..even the sarge's "Im waiting too much" look at the final bottom right pic
Keep up the amazing works as always,Joules

No prob ,keep up the amazing works ^^. Let me give a suggestion..ofcourse,you can always take it or leave it.
Try drawing full body anatomy references of your characters in a civial or normal clothed way so people can draw them without probs..doesn't has to be a final version of your characters thou..
to start with, with kitty and bunneh X3

I think it's an exciting suggestion. I've always imagined them wearing normal clothing! (I wonder if Phyllis would wear a miniskirt? ) I've only never done it yet, but maybe someday I will, when the story expands into civillian life

tail does not need armor ?
if you do covers for tail, my opinion is that it needs to be flexible but dont seem to much like a segmented insect like carapace thing because i think it may divert focus there (unless thats ur intention). i spose a simple... leather "tail" Glove, with choice placing of a few plates wud do, maybe even keep the tip bare?
all things considered its nice with a not too distant future vibe to its design but the helmet seems much more basic than the overall design. For me, i consider the headpiece important because this is usually where viewers first connect to the image (unless i spose the image is some... erotic piece... but thats a different thing altogether ) so maybe a little more tweaking? whatd u think?
i love that pose with the gun! so cooool!

Yep, I think tweaking is definitely in order. Great idea about a 'glove' for the tail. I hope you don't mind if I give that a whack. I'll definitely consider your advice for a helmet re-design. Thanks, man!
Great feedback! Lots of help there.

Pretty cool, yeah I can see the Spartan inspiration but I wouldn't call it a ripoff or anything like that. The lower torso part seems a bit odd, maybe have it more like a single vest instead of multiple plates, you could still keep most of the design, just have it come down from the top instead of from the crotch armor from the bottom. Same with the back, something about that part above her tail seems a bit out of place and like it's not fully protecting her back. Also maybe the leg armor shouldn't look so "wide"? It looks like the armor plates are just barely resting on her baggy pants instead of being nicely fitted and secured to her legs. Unless her legs are actually that wide, I dunno. Also maybe have a translucent visor over her eyes, that would give it more a futuristic look without obscuring the character's face.
Hopefully that made some sort of sense, maybe I could draw what I'm trying to explain, lol. I'm not sure if I mentioned this before but the overall approach you're taking with the cartoon animal style and the much more detailed, Aliens/Halo-like armor is something really unique and cool. Her proportions are great.

Ahh thank you so much. Yea I see what you mean about the 'wide' legs. This is embarrassing The dark part is supposed to be elastic - something they can just slip on or wrap around. Looks like I missed the little detail regarding the actual size of the legs - failed to see the bigger picture.
She looks like she's got elephantiasis or something!
I'll definitely re-work that leg armor, plus consider your suggestion about revising the abdomen plates into a more vest-like design. I think it makes sense.
Thanks for your gem of a feedback. Your comments is exactly what I need for a push in the right direction.

No problem man! I'm actually working on a military sci-fi thing of my own, so I've been tweaking around with armor designs for a while. I'm always excited to see more of your Squad work, heck, it might even end up inspiring me a bit.

Ah, I have procrastination issues to work with, as well. I'm no hard worker, so I fail miserably in the corporate world.
I had a look at your gallery. I must say I like this ([link] ) very much! It's not really the direction I'm going for, but what an excellent drawing you've made. I like how the armor plates all integrate and fit well together. The belt pouches go well, too. Now I further see what you mean, previously.
I say keep up what you're doing. I'm anxious to see how it turns out!

WOW! New character design is quite incredible, more mature and more bounded to the concept of war, I like how Phyllis looks now more serious and into her character style, the tears are heartbreaking an her pissed expression is something to be scared of The most remarkable of all draws is her crying, it feels so heavy to see with the wounds and a itter expression that screams about pains of the soul; is superb
I really want to get my greasy little hands on that story and see it and read it, I believe I am going to love it!
As always Joulester is a delight to see your art
If you don't mind a suggestion, I think that the new armor goes on the right direction, but I it may be a bit too bulky, specially for a character like Phyllis. Helmet is not in my range of taste, but that's just me I suggest that you could lighten up the body a bit so characters could feel like they move with more ease. Why don't you look for moder tactical suits, maybe there you could get a good idea
Keep the great art going man

Hey thanks very much, Foto! As usual, your warm comments and feedback are an encouragement and a great source of help. Very glad to draw for all my fans!
Glad you like the heartbreaking pose I've been feeling that like for the past few weeks, so maybe it's not a wonder that I got it spot on
Phyllis is a character with a rich, tragic backstory living in a sad world with a history equally as compelling as hers. I like to include moments where the proud and invincible sergeant totally collapses under unseen, unbearable weights as the story unfolds, slowly revealing her past. Here, she's totally vulnerable. She is sometimes seen with her shirt off in this condition to further enhance the message of her being in a vulnerable state of mind. I want to portray that the depth of her suffering is such that anyone who can hug her to comfort her in this state is either very, very skilled, or very, very stupid.
Yea I like your suggestion about lighter, more flexible armor. I think it's more practical. I've been too focused on trying to come up with something out-of-this-world that it's become quite messy and all over the place.
I'll take your suggestion to study more on the current trend in armor and helmet design, and spend more time sketching and re-focusing my design direction. Hopefully I can come up with something more coherent in the next attempt.
Thanks for your valuable feedback, Foto. This is exactly the kind of thing I need to improve on my drawings where others help me spot things that I've missed. I appreciate it lots!
