Description "True friendship isn't about being there when it's convenient; it's about being there when it's not." Odie has proven his loyalty to Garfield time and time again, but once he's taken from him by a mad scientist desiring nothing more than his loyalty, is the orange feline willing to do the same for him, even if it means sorting out his strained relationship with Jon?

Chapter 1:

Project K-9 - Chapter 1Disclaimer: Garfield and all related characters are the intellectual property of Paws Inc. and Paramount Global/Nickelodeon at the time this story was written.Chapter 1: Compromised ExperimentChannel 8 News“This is Judy Price, coming to you live from Channel 8 News. Police are still undergoing an investigation for the mass shooting that tragically occurred here on Mulberry Street approximately three weeks ago*.”*Garfield Quickies - Season 2 - Chapter 6: Reigniting an Old Flame*“As of now, no new evidence has been discovered as to who perpetrated this horrific and senseless act of violence, but rest assured, the authorities are still working hard day and night to figure out who’s responsible for instigating this tragic massacre, and the perpetrator will be apprehended once found.”While the dedicated reporter’s eyes remain glued to the camera in front of her, a man walking on all fours can be seen behind her by all the viewers of the program seemingly making a fool out of himself for everyone to see.“Police have gone on record stating that-”The man suddenly runs over to the reporter and stands on his “hind” legs, placing his hands right onto her breasts, much to the shock of the cameraman filming the entire scene and everyone else watching.*MMM MMM MMMMMMMM* He whimpers like a dog.“Sir, this is a live broadcast!” Judy insists, attempting to shove him away while he tries to lick her face. “I’m gonna have to ask you to leave the area.”The man then turns his attention over the cameraman right in front of him. Then, before the recorder could properly react, the intrusive man suddenly leaps onto him, causing him to fall onto the ground and drop the camera and its live feed to be cut from the screen, generating a static background to everyone watching this baffling event.“Dammit!” A man furiously slams his fist on the arm of his chair, having just witnessed the whole thing from his giant, flat-screen TV set, his dog laying down right beside him. “The experiment has been compromised.”The dog watches as his mysterious owner gets himself up from his chair and heads over to a heavily secured metal door. Punching in the door’s digital code, the man is allowed entrance to the room behind it, revealing it to be a laboratory filled with many top-secret experiments. One of such consists of a rat with tentacle arms attempting to scour through a maze for any hint of cheese…or crustaceans, and another involving a hamster with the talons of a hawk. The experiment that intrigues his attention the most at the present time, however, are the humans, locked away inside a bullet-proof glass tube, viciously barking at him like a pack of untamed dogs.“For years I’ve researched the voltaic impulses that drive the brains of both humans and dogs alike to perfect the formula.” The man said to himself, completely unnerved by his specimens’ vicious attempts to escape their container and maul him to death. Dog after dog, human after human, shelter after shelter, I’ve tested the serum to make people as docile as the common canine, but so far, every result has only made them completely hostile…*SIGH*...even moreso than humans already are.”The scientist retreats his attention back into his brain, pondering on what exactly is going wrong with each and every test of the serum. Already, he’s written and rewritten the formula numerous times on hundreds of papers and his whiteboard. Yet, no matter how many times he corrected every last miscalculation, and how many people he’s tested the serum on, the results usually remain the same.“It just doesn’t make any sense!” The man exclaims in frustration. “The formula is practically perfected, and I made sure that every dog that I’ve adopted and used in my research are the nicest dogs of every shelter I’ve visited.”That’s when something came into his mind.“Hey, wait a minute…”Recollecting the moments he brought each one of his canine subjects to his lab, all of them expressed a similar pattern of emotions the moment they were dropped into their cages……feelings that went from happiness……to fear……to betrayal……sadness……and eventually, pure, raw anger!Eventually, each and every dog that was ecstatic to be adopted by him would grow more and more ferocious the more needles he’s injected into their bodies, which, in turn, applies the same behavioral pattern to his human specimens as well, making the serum moot from achieving its primary goal. This very piece of information was enough for the scientist to figure out the most glaring flaw when developing the serum……he couldn’t use a nice dog……what he needs is a loyal dog……one that remains obedient regardless of how it is treated by humans……and a willing, loyal dog he shall find.“Alright buddy, the coast is clear.”Garfield ushers for his best friend to step out of the alley they’re currently hiding in. Odie, wearing Lyman’s old green jacket conveniently shrunken for him, steps out of the shadows and follows the cat as they spot the bakery located right across the street. Making sure that there’s no oncoming traffic or Claws nearby, the duo make their way through the empty street, only stopping once they’ve made it to the entrance.“Alright Odie, they close in about five minutes.” Garfield reminds the dog. “You know what to do?”*MMM HMM* Odie nods his head, acknowledging to him that he knows exactly what to do.“Good.” The cat smiles. “Now, we wait.”While the two pets wait for their moment to strike, Garfield can’t help but notice how good the green jacket looks on his friend, given how long it took for him to shrink it down to his size with the dryer.“You know, you actually do look really good in that coat.” Garfield compliments him.*AWWWW, HEH HEH* Odie chuckles, forever grateful to him for giving him this jacket on his birthday**.**Garfield Quickies - Season 2 - Chapter 13: The Birthday Canine***DING*The bell swings in its usual, loud motion as all the employees step out of the door immediately after clocking out of their daily shifts, ready to go home as soon as possible and immediately hit the sack after a long, grueling day of dealing with spoiled brats and their fellow manchildren that they call parents. As they murmur to each other about how much they want to quit their jobs, the dynamic duo make a dash for the door, just barely managing to make it inside and hide under the seats while one of the employees locks up the shop for the night. After waiting for their ears to pick up the sounds of tires screeching away, the clever pets prepare to initiate the next phase of their plan.“Alright Odie, you get the door unlocked, while I get the goods.” Garfield informs him, leaping over the counter and swiping everything his paws can snag. Odie leaps up to the doorknob with relative ease thanks to his acrobatic skills, unlocking the door from the inside…*URRRR URRRR URRRR*…right as the alarm system goes off, drastically reducing the amount of time they have to escape.“Shit!” The cat exclaims in utter frustration, their cover having just been blown. “We need to scram, now!”*AROOOOOOO* The dog howls, opening the door as quickly as possible, allowing both him and Garfield to escape the bakery carrying a box full of variantly flavored donuts in each hand. While the thieving pets make their escape into the streets…“OOF!”…Garfield trips on the asphalt, sending him falling down onto the cracked road, and the donuts flying right out of his stolen boxes and high into the air.*GASP* Odie wastes no time as he leaps into the air and successfully manages to grab at least a few of the flying donuts…*SPLAT*…right before the rest of them slam onto the asphalt, effectively ruining them.“Aw, dammit!” Garfield angrily shouts, slamming his fist into the ground. “I was so close! So! CLOSE!”*MMM MMM MMMMM* Odie whimpers, feeling bad for his friend. He kindly offers to hand Garfield one of his boxes so as to help him feel better after his little blunder.“Thanks, Odie.” Garfield smiles as he takes the box. “You’re the best dog a cat could ever have.”*HEH HEH HEH* The dog chuckles, for he’s always happy to help his friend whenever he’s in need…unless it’s cleaning out his litter box. That’s where he draws the line.*WEEEEEEEEEEEEE-OOOOOOOOWWWWWWW*Sirens are heard all across town as police cars speed towards the bakery, the sheer volume of them growing louder the longer they stay here.“C’mon, Let’s go!” Garfield ushers for the dog to follow him as they put as much distance between them and the crime scene as they can. While the alarm and its fellow sirens echo across the city, the duo eventually finds refuge behind the building of a grocery store. Catching their breaths, they lean their heads against the wall and prepare to dig in on their hard-earned dessert.“Finally, I can eat some donuts in peace.” Garfield said, gorging on his share. “Ever since Jon put me on another diet, it’s been nothing but carrots and celery.”*AWWWW* Odie sympathizes with him, knowing full-well how miserable he’s been since the diet started.“*SIGH* If only there was a way for him to get off my ass. I love the guy and all, but his rules can be just a little bit too strict for my liking. I mean, sure, he’s nice to me, but it feels as if he’s not as loyal to me as he once was.” He pats Odie’s head. “Unlike you.”*SLUUUURP* The dog gives him a big doggy kiss, thanking him for the compliment.“Mmmmaybe a little too loyal.” The cat said to the reader, wiping the drool off his donut. Not another word was spoken from the feline for the remainder of the evening, for he and his canine companion remain busy gorging down their sweetened repasts in peace.
