The "Ents" also known as the shepherds of the forests were a race of giants who awoke in the first age of middle earth at the request of the goddess "Yavanna" who, concerned about the welfare of animals and plants, intervened in the creation of Guardian spirits for the forests.

With the loss of the females, the Ents declined in their population over time until only inhabiting the forest of "Fangorn" but at some point in the third age they called a meeting to attack "Isengard" when the white magician "Saruman" them. betrayal by cutting down their forests beginning the last march of the Ents:
