In short, the "Kroot" are a humanoid race of carnivorous birds that inhabit the Arboreal world "Pech", their skin and spikes can vary as well as their color tone, their diet being what defines their final appearance; If a "Kroot" feeds on "Ork" meat it will take on a greenish hue and increase its muscle mass, in the same way feeding on the Eldar increases its cunning and skill in battle. (Even manifesting psychic powers.)
The great diversity in the physical aspects of the carnivorous "Kroots" comes from taking the qualities of their enemies when consuming their meat together with the ability of their stomach to break down the ingested DNA taking the most remarkable characteristics of their prey; According to their ritual beliefs, the "Kroot" consume the flesh of their enemy to preserve their warrior spirit.
By honor and commitment, the "Kroot" are allies of the Tau and their ideal of the common good for all races, but their tribal beliefs of continuing to learn from the galaxy force them to expand their horizons to consume other types of meat, having a reputation for Hunters and skilled shock warriors, the "kroot" offer their mercenary services to other races through contracts that they will honor with loyalty to their contractors. (Human Inquisitors often pay "Xenos" mercenaries for their personal wars outside of Imperial jurisdiction.)
By tribal rule the "Kroot" do not eat "Tyranid" meat because it gives them mutant indigestion, they cannot digest the living metal of the Necrons, and they avoid demon-corrupted human flesh such as attempting to consume the corpses of their Tau friends. (The Tau saved the planet "Pech" from an invasion of orks and after Tyranids for this reason respect their blood debt.)
The Technological level of the "Kroot" was pre-industrial but the alliance with the Tau Empire gave them advances to obtain their own ships such as sophisticated plasma weapons; Despite the technological leap, the "Kroot" retain their primitive appearance and bone armor out of respect for their mother goddess "Vawk the Huntress".
