Indeed, I think its because The Little Mermaid was the start of Disney's Golden age, screw SnowWhite, THIS was the one that started it all
It really opened people's eyes to the possiblities of animation, and the challenges Disney faced with this movie goes with-out saying. Not only does it have spectacular animation, but a awesome story, a classy lead and fantastic songs
