Northlands Expedition

PART 1
Part 2  || Part 3  || Part 4  || Part 5

Story was written by SpottyLuck

Agna was positively brimming with joy. He had pestered his brother the moment he heard that he was going on the expedition. The idea of going on such a big important mission alongside his brother was just too good a thing to pass up! And such a small matter like being told not to join Aga wasn’t about to stop him either! So, when the day came, he eagerly packed everything he thought he’d need and didn’t hesitate to trail after the other unlucky nyulop as he headed north.
The two went to the lake next to the town and followed the river, that connected to the lake, upstream. All the while, Aga was telling his little brother to go back home, but the stubborn and spirited nyulop didn’t seem to hear what he was saying. As they neared the base of the mountains, they crossed the river and ventured into the forest, bickering back and forth. Then before they knew it… night was suddenly approaching.
Agna knew when he heard his brothers resigned sigh that he had won, and he couldn’t be happier. He was going to go on this journey with his brother! There was no going back now. As the two set up camp for the night, Agna was practically bouncing on his toes. He wondered what sort of things they’d see! What sort of challenges awaited them! What was the north like? Would there be any Remnants?
When they finished, the two brothers sat down and started reorganizing their things. Aga seemed keen on knowing what they had and who was going to carry what. Agna tossed some of their things in the tent before he crossed his legs and began to unwrap his scarf from around his neck. Despite it being close to going to sleep, he was still so wound up, with thoughts whirling around inside his head. It wasn’t long until he couldn’t hold them in any longer, and he happily began to voice those thoughts to his brother as he gazed at the blue fabric between his claws.

Aga gazed at his little brother and felt a rush of warmth and pride. Despite being relentlessly harassed by this bothersome brother of his… he couldn’t help but be happy they were together, and he suddenly couldn’t even imagine Agna not being there with him. Though it did cause a sharp feeling of guilt to cut into his chest. He had tuned away his friend, Fadedus, when he was asked if he could accompany him. He wanted to be alone, he told him. But he was hardly alone anymore. He suppressed a sigh and smiled at Agna as he went on about their action-packed journey. He supposed he couldn’t change anything right now… besides he had to focus on the matter at hand. It would be dangerous if his mind was elsewhere.
While sorting through their things, the older nyulop delicately pulled out a throwing knife and tested its edge against his finger, testing its sharpness. Oren makes fine weapons indeed! As he examined the small piece of steel in his paws, he wondered if he could use this against a threat. He turned his green gaze to his brother and realized, with a deep sense of protective determination, that he absolutely could.
He stared at Agna with a subtle hint of adoration in his eyes. His little brother had gotten so big. Big enough to go on an important mission that would take them far away from their home, with all sorts of perilous obstacles. His little brother who he could still recall sleeping with stuffed creatures, helping his peers, running into branches; his bright, earnest, caring, little brother.
Aga wanted to go on this expedition alone, in hopes that he could maybe find out more about himself. Become more of the finley he wanted to be. Maybe even learn some of the magic he aspired to possess. But surely, he could still do that, and surely he could do so while watching his brother do the same.

Fadedus stepped carefully through the forest, able to navigate easily with the light of the full moon coating the world in its enchanting glow. He tucked and weaved through the brush, making sure to avoid any twigs or branches that may give away his location; after all, he had to make sure he wasn’t seen or heard from the other nyulop he was tracking. The thought sent a tingle of giddy energy through him, almost causing his fur to bush up. This was so thrilling! Artemis had taught him how to track and how to be stealthy, but this was the first time he had ever used that training outside of practicing.
His long ears twitched and perked upright when he heard voices. He set his staff gently against a tree before taking a few steps forward so that he could peak around the trunk. And there they were! Aga and Agna were sitting together in a small clearing almost right in front of him! Fadedus silently caught his breath in surprise and excitement. He was so relieved and ecstatic to have found his friends.
It looked like they had already pitched up a tent. The area appeared to have been used as a campsite once before… there were even a few logs left behind for sitting or perhaps firewood.
The pale lucky nyulop instinctively angled his ears forward as he watched the finley. He couldn’t quite hear what they were saying but it seemed that they were looking through their bags. Perhaps making sure they had everything? Keeping track of their supplies maybe?
Agna looked so elated, with his ears up high, a big smile on his muzzle and his tail wagging up and down. He was finally allowed to travel with his big brother. Fadedus was thrilled for him but felt a small stab of envy. Aga had turned both Fadedus and Agna away when they had asked to join him on the expedition. Yet there they were… two brothers together on a journey…
Fadedus saw Aga reach his wing out to Agna in a fond brotherly gesture. He felt his ears drop and he looked at the ground. How could he show himself now? They looked so happy. He couldn’t break that moment. He couldn’t just butt in on their adventure together. Besides Aga didn’t want Fadedus to go with him… he had said so himself.
Fadedus backed away so that he wouldn’t be noticed. He followed them because he was worried. It was the whole reason why he wanted to go with Aga in the first place. He was worried about him. Maybe… maybe he could keep following them. That way they could have their brotherly time together and he could keep making sure they were safe. Yes. He liked that idea.
Having made up his mind, the lucky nyulop picked up his staff and set off to find a place to sleep for the night.
