It's a dangerous world out there, and most of all for the humans with the unfortunate task of eking out a living in a very specific part of the world. But why was this civilization barely able to call itself such? Why, when others were building mighty cities and soaring cathedrals, were these unfortunate few living in thatched huts wedged deep in mountain valleys? Why did they cast their eyes across the horizon in fear whenever a cloud obscured the sun? Why did they go to ground at the first sign of a slight rumble of the earth or the scattering of a flock of birds? The answer is simple.

In other places, humanity is top dog. They control the flow of the world and the movement of the herds. They are the predators. But here, they are merely prey.

And when the large ones stalk down from the mountains and find one of their little villages -one just like this one- they fall upon them like wolves upon sheep. They might run, they might fight back, it makes little difference other than some light sport. But even as these marauders loot, pillage and feast, the ground may begin to tremble, the rocks slide from the hillsides and the clouds may part. A stray footstep may bury half of their number, and attract her attention.

Sekvra didn't truly know why she bothered with such small prey. Maybe it was the way they scattered at her approach, maybe it was their total ineptitude, maybe it was just the way they tasted. But one thing she couldn't deny was that all of her prey was looking a little small as of late. She mused silently to herself as she began to gather up her little find, all destined to become her next meal, but... maybe some not quite yet. They were wiggling oh so fiercely, and maybe some of that energy could be put to better use. As she lapped up a couple, her other cupped hand sailed downwards, pressing the remainder firmly against her. With a deep, throaty sigh, eyes gazing into the heavens, Sekvra almost laughed -it got easier every day.

When one doesn't even stop to consider the threat an enemy might pose -when they can lay them low with one languid step - and when they can afford to use their prey for business or pleasure, well...
Who can say they aren't the Apex Predator.
