Description Another from my experimental photo sessions.

Again, I'm trying to keep the lighting and colors more real than shopped. For my photos within the last few months, instead of relying on Photoshop to help me with the colors and exaggerated lighting, I've actually done it myself -- in a somewhat ghetto fashion though. You guys might enjoy reading what I used... Though 'simplicity' would not be a good description.

Taken in my backyard in the dead of night. For lighting: A partially 'covered' flash on my digital camera via a triple folded paper towel and two colored plastic covers from PSP game holders over a flashlight. Oh, and we can't forget the spray bottle that my parents use for their laundry. You laugh but, hey, it works!

-----------------------------
A couple people have asked how I got this effect, so I figure I might as well post it in here.

I sprayed the rose with water while it was really dark outside. I used a flashlight as my light source and covered it with a blue piece of plastic (apparently I used another color too, but I don't remember what it was -- probably purple). The folded paper towel was just to dampen the flash so it's not as bright... I *think* I was using normal exposure. However, lately I've been using the lowest exposure I can as it usually produces better results.

I've found that it's harder to accomplish this effect with a "nice" camera. I've tried my Dad's Canon and I couldn't get the flash to be the right intensity and have the camera capture it the way I wanted to... So I've been using my point-and-shoot.

The annoying part is that every flower is different, so the technique I used on this rose won't work on other ones very well (like this looks horrible with a red rose). Mostly just trial and error. Experimental FTW!

lol. Well, reliable flashlights are hard to find in my house. =] lol. And honestly... I wouldn't know where to start looking for colored plasitc.. would a mountain dew bottle work?

Ooo probably, lol. I hadn't thought of that. I know what you mean on flashlights; I pretty much stole my dad's good one. Colored paper works well too, but it needs to be thin (so not like construction paper)

Very good job. At first look I thought that the colors were post process. Interesting story on the ghetto photo studio. Sounds how we do it here too.
