a simple tutorial for coloring hair. very basic, should be easy to follow.

1. start with the base color. this should be the main color you want the hair to be. pick a medium tone, not really dark and not really light. even for black hair pick a dark blue-gray or purple-gray.

2. apply darker and lighter shades using water color or airbrush tools. use a medium sized brush and make all your strokes go the same direction. look at the hair and see which direction it is going.

3. use dodge and burn tools to add more highlight and shadow. you don't have to do this but i like the look it gives.

4. use a small antialiased ("fuzzy") brush to apply uniform strokes in many shades as well as different colors. in this brown hair i added red and blonde. in the blue hair at the top there is aqua, teal, pink, white and purple.

* take care to apply lighter colors more towards the highlight and darker more towards the shadow. but remember to apply them throughout the hair.

* don't be afraid to add unnatural colors when coloring natural colored hair. it can make it look more luminous.
