Before Kaiju no.8 there was Ziga.

Ziga was a dark Kaiju based manga that was released by Shounen jump back in 2018 and sadly did not last vary long, being cancelled after 2 months and with only 14 chapters only handful of people (me included) probably remember this short lived series.

The story follows a young boy named Ko, who has a reoccurring nightmare of a giant monster that destroys the city and crashes him and then he wakes up, but one day the nightmare becomes reality as this giant monster attacks and destroys his home, school, and kills his friends, including his crush. He soon is recruited into a special division of the government and learns that he has some kind of special abilities that he tries to control to fight the monster known as Ziga and other monsters, but it is soon revealed that Ko is Ziga.

Ko learns that he is one of these ‘Kaiju shifters’ (not official name) that was sent to earth to prepare for an invasion to wipe out humanity, but instead of following through with it Ko rebels and fights back against these invading Kaiju from another world/dimension, useing his powers to atoning for his sins and protecting humanity as the giant black monster Ziga.

The story did seem promising with an unique cast of characters and the Kaiju designs were just as, but the draw back is that story wasn’t well developed and was rushed and it doesn’t get to interesting until the second half, that and around the same time Attack on Titan was still going, so this would probably be why it didn’t last vary long. If it did continue, with more plot, world building, and development it would probably have been one of the best Kaiju manga series to be made.

Though it may not have been long it is quite possible that this story may have inspired the creation of Kaiju no.8.
