Hey, everybody. Guess who's going to be in the next game.
It used to be that I never read the Godzilla Greepypasta. That situation has now remedied itself, but it hasn't altered my opinion of Solomon greatly. Heck, the story didn't creep me out as much as it should have. But still, we are here today to talk about the design, which I find to be the artist's standard (very good), but the design is a tad bland.
Actually, a lot about Solomon is bland. He's a giant blue bat with a skull head. That's fairly cool, but wing-arms are standard. I'm most curious about how it'll look once the wings are fully extended. Bipedal with arm wings were not new since the harpies came around. The Good Bad Guy trope is also not new. His attacks are fairly standard, and there is a lot to work with, but his play style is, well, bland. It's the generic setup countless monsters use in their construction. Sure he flies, but that's more common than people think it is. Also, a breath weapon is a classic (cite: Bland, but stable), while the energy attacks from the wings are a common feature a lot of winged video game bosses employ.
Overall, Solomon is the sum of his parts, and those bland parts make for a monster the I feel is very bland. Nothing new in terms of physical designs or game play. It causes one to wonder how Solomon could still be considered the best.

Well, ultimately taste is taste and there's no getting around it. But design isn't what makes Solomon who he is. He's a classical demon(Something we don't often see in this genre) with a gothic, fairly conservative design, not that far removed from Chernabog. His role in the story is what makes him interesting, and his personality that makes him a boss.
It's not exciting to see him because his model or his gameplay is groundbreaking. It's exciting because we get to play Solomon!

"Still the best" comes from the creepypasta.

I haven't read that creepypasta either, but I think I may do just that in the future if only to understand why so many people are squeeing over this lol. But anyway, looking at the bio, I noticed that with his abilities, statistics, and combat strategy compared to other monsters, Solomon sounds like a jack of all stats rather than anyone truly special. I see him as a character you could use at the start of the game to get the hang of the basics, allowing you to switch to more specialized monsters later on. I do agree that it could use some extra design elements, but it could be that the blandness was intentional on Matt's part. Either way, this design was intended to be faithful to the original sprite work, or at least as faithful as possible. And since this is still very much a game in progress, I suppose that judging could wait until we actually see how he stacks up against some of the other contenders here.
No, I don't deny that he looks relatively bland compared to some of the others, and I certainly like the skull-face and the wings. But who knows? A lot of franchises have ways of taking something bland and giving it a new refreshing twist, so there's still a chance that this series could give Solomon at least a few unique elements in terms of gameplay if not in design.

Hah, awesome, you actually got this guy for your game? That's pretty neat. his origin makes for sense in an actual Kaiju setting than in a 'haunted' video game cartridge. Very impressive looking beast, to be sure.
Hey, what does 1973 mean to this Solomon I wonder?

Yeah, perhaps your right, it's probably the date of his rebellion from RED or something along those lines.Β

Yes and maybe Godzilla replay is a prequel to how RED was created.

Dinalfos5 In reply to megamanfan43 [2013-10-30 05:31:15 +0000 UTC]
Yes, maybe. I never did finish reading that 'replay' part with the other game, I don't think it was finished when I was reading about it. I never did like the concept of the 'Creepy Pasta', that this was a story of a 'haunted' game, as if RED and even Solomon were real demons inhabiting a game cartridge and using it as a vessel to hurt people in the real world. Β Using a Godzilla game of all things as a means to interact with the real world, simultaneously using a hellscape as a background to be fought with, and interacting with other Godzilla Lore in an 8-bit setting, such as new Kaiju like Biollante, Battra and Orga. It was just more confusing and ineffective than it was worth, and not in the least bit scary. Β That said, Solomon, RED, and the other monsters were interesting concepts, and I think they could fit well into the actual Godzilla mythos as actual demons that fight with and against Godzilla and the other Kaiju. Thus its role in Colossal Kaiju Combat is fine, as they are demons manifest on the mortal plane alongside real Kaiju, where demons, magic and giant monsters are the norm, and not demons haunting cyber-space in our 'real' world. Β
As for the Sprites and stuff itself, I think it would have been amusing to me if the whole concept was presented as a fake 'Fan Made Hack', using the altered screen shots to present the concept of an altered game based on someone's intentional hacking, rather than because it was 'Haunted'. The fact that the game was so full of hellish and demonic iconography could be the result of a disturbed Hacker and nothing more. The idea that the game could hear, could talk back, and was related to events in the player's past, was total BS to me, even if no one was supposed to believe that it was real. I guess I never grasped the whole appeal of Creepy Pasta stories like that as a whole.Β

Dinalfos5 In reply to megamanfan43 [2013-10-30 15:09:33 +0000 UTC]
Well, regardless if that is the case, It doesn't change that I found the concepts odd in their meta-setting of a haunted cart, and found the idea severely diminished, and did not add to, the story telling experience. I understand its just supposed to be a story, but it wasn't a very interesting one then.Β
That said, the artistry in manipulating sprites in making the fake screenshots for the story was very well done. Solomon, RED, and all the demons and other new Kaiju sprites were all quite well done in sprite form. But all that effort could have done with out the lame narrative and just gone with the idea that it was a fake fan hack of the game, and it could have avoided a lot of lame BS. Β

Disappointing to me to see your critical over it's biggest selling points. People remember this Creepypasta for the accompanying visuals AND the story. There's no fascination for a 'supposedly hacked game' as it loses power over the reader. More people would find that less entertaining. But I guess not everyone can be pleased. A Creepypasta is nothing without a story.

Dinalfos5 In reply to Cryptdidical [2013-11-06 06:28:14 +0000 UTC]
Be disappointed if you want, I still didn't like anything about those aspects of the story, the notion of the game being 'haunted' was so ludicrous, I almost walked away from finishing reading it, especially at the end when he was paralyzed by RED during the final boss battle, and was saying he was feeling the Kaiju's pain. I don't know what he expected his readers to feel, but it wasn't fear, dread, concern, or suspense in my case. I admit that Creepypasta have appeal, just not with me. It may indeed have power over others, but it held not one spark with me. It's just not an entertaining notion to me. But hey, I am just one reader who found the concept, for lack of a better term, lame. That's just me, we are all entitled to our own opinions, and we are allowed to express them.Β
And it's not like the whole concept was lost on me, I enjoyed parts of the story, just not the core story itself. The story within the story, the fake, 'haunted' game was very interesting. The idea of Godzilla, Mothra, and Anguirus teaming with rogue demon Solomon to traverse a whole hellish realm to fight various demons as well as an army of Kaiju, to face off against the evil master Red, was a fascinating one. I just didn't like anything to do with the drama outside the game itself. The project was indeed masterfully crafted from a technical stand point, all the spites and screenshots for the new monsters, bosses and Kaiju, as well as the backgrounds and other fake screen shots, were just awesome, and took a lot of skill and hard work, that he should indeed be proud of and I have nothing but praise for. But I think he was a far better artist than he was a writer, if only because of the chosen premise being Β a flawed one to me from the get go. Β While I will not hold it against those that do like this kind of thing for doing so, I make no apologies for my own dislike of it.Β
