'Cept he's never been a Mutant. Gamera's origin is either he's an evolutionary anomaly, or that he's a living weapon made by the ancient Super-Civilizations to fight Gyaos. Still a cool picture, though.

Mutants are accidents. Gamera was made, likely from scratch. His Turtle-like appearance is probably mostly an evolutionary parallel. Of course, I'm probably over-thinking it.

Ironically, Shusuke Kaneko has gone on record saying that, in the Japanese version anyway, turtles don't exist in the Gamera Trilogy universe.

From what I can recall about the statement that Turtles don't exist, in that continuity, Turtles were regulated to Mythology instead, and were meant to be mythical creatures akin to Dragons and Phoenix, especially in regards to mythical beasts like Genbu, the Southern Turtle. Thus Gamera was supposed to inspire real awe in people who saw him, as he was not just some mundane animal people give little thought to, but a creature out of mythology, giving the same sense of wonder that is seen with King Ghidorah and Manda when we compare them to dragons. At least, that's what I think he intended with that notion. If Turtles were just nothing, then Gamera is just strange, and nothing more.
As for Toto, I believe he's from a separate continuity were Turtles are indeed real.

Strange yes, but it make more sense for Turtles to be mythological rather than them being completely not existent and thus completely unknown. to be fair, that sense of wonder you're supposed to get is largely unfelt by the audiences in the movies, so he didn't do quite a good job getting his point across if he needed to explain that in interviews.
