After building a supply pad and maybe a barracks you will definitely want to build a reactor. Reactors give you a higher tech level which allows you to upgrade your units. Especially since without a reactor you are stuck with a turret-less warthog, marines and flamethrowers. All of which aren't that good unless upgraded.
