Description Did this really quick when I found out how to fix my WIP model's hair!
This requires a very basic understanding of PMD/PMX editor to do.

That's more of a texture/UV issue! Did it come exactly like that, or did you maybe join/flatUV some vertices? Make sure the texture is also a .png and completelu transparent. Is the hair made of more than one material?

If that can't be fixed, you could always try switching the texture to one solid color. You'll lose the illusion of realistic hair but it'll solve the visual issue you're having here.

Whew, that's a lot of info. Thank heavens, I've been running around in circles trying to do something about this.Β

Yep, definitely png. Although, I think it may be the image not being completely transparent, like you said. When I have it open in photoshop it looks fine, but in PMX tex view it's a whole other story.

If I were to go ahead and clean that up, how would you suggest I go about it?

I'll stop you right there before you go through the extra trouble; it's not your .png. If Photoshop says its totally transparent, than it is. PMX/PMD editor has lots of its own quirks, and that is one of them: it doesn't correctly preview transparent textures. Don't ask me why, because i'm not entirely sure.Β

Have you tried using the UV Mapping Primer?Β www.deviantart.com/art/PMD-UV-…

You can open the material that your hair is on and take a look at how it's UV mapped. If the UV is messed up like I think it is, you should be able to see so and even go about fixing it.

Wonderful, thanks so much for that! I'll definitely do some playing around with that UV Mapping Primer. I've got it open, it looks okay...??? I think??? I'm no expert. I've tried moving the reference vertices around on the main map: enlarging, shrinking, and forming them closer around the texture. Only serves to either make the tex wobbly in the latter case, or shrink/enlarge it. Doesn't seem to get rid of the transparency problem.Β

Just out of curiosity, do you happen to know why it is that if the UV map works fine in Sims, it then decides to kick the bucket in PMX/etc.? Is it just the quirk factor of PMX?

I have no clue, as I barely do any messing with game rips at all, let alone the process of changing formats and all that's involved in that. Just changing parts from one 3D format to another can do some weird stuff. Some game engines can do some cool little things for their models that might not translate over exactly when converted to something as different from a normal 3D editing program as PMX is. If I remember a ripping tutorial i saw a long time ago, you had to do some little tricks to even get the hair to display as intended. Not so sure if it's just a quirk of PMX, so much as it is a quirk of game ripping itself.

If you'd like, you can send me the model or just the part and I can play around to see what happens. I might not be able to explain it, but I might be able to discover the issue and tell you what I did to fix it.

Mm, I see. Makes sense. Yeah, I remember a tute saying that there's a whole lot to do with overlays, multipliers and masks, but they mess with the color of the base texture (the multi) and then it's just a pain to edit the tex. So I don't do it if I don't have to, but perhaps I'll have to try in the future and see if that fixes the problem. In the meantime, I'll gladly accept your offer. I'll upload a zip on stash and send it to you asap. Thanks so much for the help, you're a starΒ  Β

I've always done this but sometimes the hairs I rip from sims3 look fine in PMDeditor but then have white/transparent chunks in the scalp in MMD itself. It's apparently a problem with the texture file itself. Do you know how to fix that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KamaNoTenshi In reply to haswaytoomanyOcs [2014-07-17 06:12:38 +0000 UTC]

It could possibly be the texture, but something like that would show in PMD too I would think...Try checking the load order of your materials; make sure the head and skin load before the hair in question. If that doesn't fix it, it could just be a bad/messy rip; especially so if you only see the issue in SOME and not all. c:

Select the material and click either the up or down arrows along the bottom. Or for PMD, select the material and right click. Select the third option (U) for up and (D) for down.
