It's very well drawn, although the perspective is off. If the handicap sign on the ground is that close to her body, her hand and the chalk should not be that massive.

Thestrange87 In reply to dr-loboto [2011-11-02 03:13:52 +0000 UTC]

I actually disagree, respectfully of course, even though we agree on the fact the perspective is off in comparison to say real life, it really fits this art style. If he would have used proper perspective I think it would have significantly ruined the artpiece.

dr-loboto In reply to Thestrange87 [2011-11-02 04:42:10 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, but I have to strongly disagree with that. It is never acceptable to dismiss a problem with the argument that it is part of the artstyle. There would be ways to fix the perspective while keeping the style intact.

For example, if the artist changed the dimensions of the handicap sign that it starts out smaller towards terezi and large towards the viewer, they could keep terezi almost entirely unchanged.

That would not affect the artstyle at all, unless you are implying the perspective error is part of the artstyle, in which case I'd say the artstyle should indeed be changed.

Tell that too Picasso.

dr-loboto In reply to Thestrange87 [2011-11-02 15:47:37 +0000 UTC]

First of all, Picasso was perfectly able to paint realistically before he started painting differently.

Secondly, his style was symbolic of his emotions and the feeling he was trying to convey. What emotion does a clearly wrong arm with gigantism tell about this piece aside from an error in perspective?

It exaggerates the perspective giving incite into the mind of the character, cartoonist do it all the time intentionally, especially in Anime. He may have not have intended it on it, which is why its a mistake, but if he had it would be an expression of how the character feels about chalking the parking lot. It may be minor in reality, but to her, its a big deal and lots of fun.

dr-loboto In reply to Thestrange87 [2011-11-03 02:02:46 +0000 UTC]

Hence why he needn't change her figure to correct the error. Notice how my recommendation was to change the dimensions of the handicap sign, not terezi's arm?

Thestrange87 In reply to dr-loboto [2011-11-03 03:02:15 +0000 UTC]

With the right lens you could take an actual photograph that look like that, I don't see or get your point then sorry, perhaps I'm just a little off today.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dr-loboto In reply to Thestrange87 [2011-11-03 03:21:12 +0000 UTC]

That would be fine if any of the picture showed the uniform stretching a lens like a fish eye or what have you would cause.

What I'm saying is, instead of making the handicap sign on her uniformly sized, stretch it towards the viewer. That will keep the size and proportion of terezi unchanged, while also making the perspective appear less off.

As an example for the change I mean, not exactly, but just to explain what I mean by stretching, take a look at

[link]

If the head of the sign was stretched closer to the viewer, and the rest pulled closer to terezi, it would make it look like she is reaching out towards the viewer, and thus keep her wholly unchanged, while fixing the perspective.

I don't think your right at all. That perspective would make the ground look uneven. I don't think anything should be done to the ground, the ground it perfectly fine, it's the hand that's huge, but I don't think that's a bad thing. You also use disproportions in your art so I still don't get your point.

dr-loboto In reply to Thestrange87 [2011-11-03 03:58:32 +0000 UTC]

I no longer use my deviant art to host my art, the finished pieces at least, and just use it to collect other people's arts in my favorites. Also, from the angle that the picture is set up in, the ground would indeed be uneven. This is fundamental perspective, that things get bigger towards the viewer and smaller towards the distance. Not all shots are even, just like, were I to use your camera analogy, to take a picture at an askew angle.

Another image to explain my meaning: [link]

Thestrange87 In reply to dr-loboto [2011-11-03 04:03:12 +0000 UTC]

Your example image is at the wrong angle all together though, the ground perspective here is not all that off. The only thing that is off is the hand and chalk which I agreed with you us is off, but I disagreed that it made the art look bad. It liked it better this way, mistake or not.

dr-loboto In reply to Thestrange87 [2011-11-03 04:13:36 +0000 UTC]

That example is just to explain the fundamentals of perspective I mentioned, not to solely apply to the image we are discussing.

And it's perfectly fine if you like it that way. Someone will like the painting, regardless of what state it is in. However, a perspective error is a perspective error, which the artist themselves even admitted to not being intentional, and should be corrected.

That's for him to decide: not me, not you. I simple made an opposite position to you, respectfully; I didn't intend for this to become an argument. You stated and opinion, it was clearly constructive criticism and not disrespectful, he agreed. All I was doing was giving him an alternative perspective: mine. Perhaps he'll see it my way instead, who knows, may he wont, not my point. I was simply stating a respectful disagreement saying, liked it the way it is.
