As opposed to a vulnerable center-of-mass position? If the pilot is out at the edges, he's at least got a chance of escaping when he ejects (assuming his tech and ethos allows for that).

but from the center he is only open to the vertical plane. In the front he can be shot out from the half sphere of area in front of him, from below, from above, side to side, everywhere but behind him and down.
He has a chance of ejection in te center as well, though I'm not saying put him the in the center, but further back on the nose like our jet fighters - the farthest away from the engine and guns that would get shot at, and the most heabily armored per-direction.
Though in a way this method becomes a light-fighter - as the visability is better from that position.
