A twirling, angry mess of teeth and steel, that against all intuition is the heart of modern transportation.
I know how a gearbox works on paper, I've seen the schematics and principles of operation and disassemblies, but it's still hard to look at them without a slight sense of disbelief at all that engineering seamlessly coming together. To think that there’s in every vehicle a system of rapidly rotating interlocked steel teeth that are linked and unlinked dozens of times per day without the whole process ending in a metallic screech every time.
