David’s Odyssey
Written & Illustrated by. Kenneth Barker
January
An Introduction
The world lamp had doused her flame and bid her fawn goodnight. In doing so the Night had come like an artist, painting the heavens with beautiful shades of black and blue. The stars danced and ran playfully like children on their natal day. Let us take away our eyes from the sky for a moment and focus a bit lower. Here we find a boy, not yet a man, of the age twelve. His name is David. He had awoken to find himself cradled in a small field. Slowly rubbing the sleep from His eyes, David looked up and gained his first memory, The image of sky imbedding itself deep into His subconscious. Thoughts of tranquility and amazement flooded His young mind. All was as it should be.
Shaking what was left of sleep from his body, David pondered the possibilities of his existence. He could do anything, be anything he dreamed. He found much pleasure in these reflections but they soon faded away as most things do. As he finally floated back down to reality, He affirmed to Himself that action must be taken for any dreams to become a reality. David looked to his surroundings. The only visible sight for miles was what looked to be a small lump upon the earth far to the South. David soon made up His mind that this would be his first destination on this strange and magical planet.
The Weeping Tree
David gazed upon the old oak tree as a light snow began to trickle from the heavens. All signs of life had hidden or fled away. The only sounds that pierced His ears were those from a gentle wind cascading over the lands and from a swinging object hanging tightly from the tree in front of Him. David stepped cautiously closer to the large tree. He was quick to distinguish that the object was not an object at all but instead a young, beautiful girl. David felt a sense of compassion and love for Her that he could not possibly comprehend at such a young age. He felt somehow connected to Her. A dark emptiness filled David’s soul as he stood gazing upon her cold, pale flesh. Who was she? Why had this happened to such an innocent creation? He wished he could turn back but knew he could not.
