While out on patrol, Ahadi had a surprise visitor.
“Uru! What are you doing?”
Uru nuzzled against him as she followed. “I feel labor will be soon. I must leave to find a safe place to have our litter.
Ahadi mumbled an understanding, but swallowed the lump in his throat. He and Uru had only been apart a few days at a time when he went patrolling the pridelands. But with this, Uru will be gone for more than 2 months to shelter their cubs until they are strong enough to be introduced to the pride.
Ever since they were cubs, Uru was there for Ahadi. Comforting him and offering wisdom when political finesse was needed. He began thinking that the pride would crumble without her.
“You’ll be ok.” Uru said.
“What?” Gasped Ahadi and stopped dead in his tracks, startled by her comment.
Uru licks his cheek and smiles. “I know you believe you aren’t fit to be king, but you are. You will bring this kingdom into a brighter future with your might-” She looks toward her swollen belly. “ and our cubs.”
Ahadi and Uru nuzzle each others heads, soaking in these last few moments.
“ I will always love you.” Ahadi whispers in her ear, before returning to patrol.
