Description

Totally fictional sketch of "Apache", a Viet Cong markswoman hunted down and killed on 13th of November 1966.

Nobody knows what she looked like, only that she was small-built, or even her name. She operated around Hill 55, in the vicinity of Duc Pho, 8 miles (13 km) from Da Nang in Vietnam. She used a 7.62mm Model 44 Russian-made Mosin-Nagant rifle, with a scope. She was from Hanoi, mixed Vietnamese and French, and probably beautiful, much more so than in my drawing—most Eurasian women are. She was 31 when she met her death in the hands of a US Marine sniper, Hatchcock, who shot her from ambush as she squatted down to urinate. Then, when "Apache" fell, he shot her second time, "for good measure", and her body convulsed. It was his best shot ever, Hatchcock later bragged. "I had tears in my eyes afterward," he said. "I enjoyed that kill."
