Description
"As a born tiefling, Yvari was born with some innate spellcasting ability, not a lot, but enough that she could be set apart from most her peers. She was also privileged with an ancestral aptitude for magic due to her bloodline again, but she quickly learned to have control over sorcerer powers. She became incredibly proficient in her powers, using them for everything she could, never needing lifting a finger if a mage hand could do it, never turning down a light if thaumaturgy could do it. She managed to avoid most of the ridicule of being a tiefling on account of her parents being well-liked and also knowing how to socially manipulate any situation to benefit their daughter. This was never enough for her though, and she began seeking other forms of magical power. She had no willingness for the devotion of the monastic life of a cleric, nor the determination to make a Paladin's oath. It was in her attempts to gain the powers of a wizard (something she was not intelligent enough to ever conceivably obtain) she heard rumours of the Warlock. Warlocks were not commonplace in her life, and most were considered to be outlanders, or even cultists to unknown power; but the prospect of just being given more power interested Yvari, so she began to seek them out.
The Archfey rejected her; she was far too hot-headed to feasibly wield the powers of their kind. The Great Old One never responded to her calls, potentially fearing what she could become, or maybe because he was beyond even her reach.
After more extensive research, Yvari learned the rumours of the Fiend, who she believed she would be able to bargain with given her Infernal bloodline. The domain of the Fiend was supposedly off an abandoned coast deemed unreachable due to local volcanic activity, but using sheer force and of course excessive coin, Yvari put together a crew to reach the coast.
They never got there. The crew never learned that the volcanos were not above ground, they were below the ocean, and without anyone even expecting it the entire ship was destroyed within seconds. Yvari was slammed into a rockface.
In a half-dead, half-drowning dazem she lay awaiting someone to save her. No one came. not for the hours or days she lay there.
It was as she finally drifted out of consciousness that she fell, smacking the surface of the water and opening her eyes into the deep below. And the deep looked back.
The rest is... not describable in anything comprehensive in the Material Plane, but she got what she wanted. The Pact of the Fathomless.
Her Infernal blood that once ran with the heat of magma now ran with the icy chill of an atlantic glacier.
The next thing she awoke to was the sway of a whalling ship that had picked her up, apparently half frozen in a block of ice.
Making her way back to land, she found that she had indeed gained the powers of a Warlock, and managed to maintain her spellcasting of her Sorcerer blood.
It came with a cost, as magic always does. Casting magic now takes a physical toll on her body, causing extreme pain every time she so much as tries a cantrip, but yet she persists, learning what she can about gaining only more power. Her magic works, but it causes agonizing pain to resonate along her nerves
After this incident, with what their daughter had done, her parents completely disowned her, not only realising their own mistake of how they raised her, but also that she was no longer their daughter, merely a thrall of whatever lurked below those depths. Without their emotional or financial support she has no power to venture out again to find the patron.
She ended years having to learn what most adults would learn as children, how to take care of herself. Even now it's almost laughable how she can be this age and struggle to do something as simple as making a bed or cooking a meal without a total reliance on magic.
The Fathomless' motives may never be entirely known, but they certainly have made Yvari more powerful, should she not be happy?
She never heard from the patron, but who knows, maybe one day it will release her and let her go? Or maybe it's waiting until it needs her."
