they know each other since like 2nd year of middle school;

Mako just moved to Japan from China and ended up in the same school/class with Momo
ofc she was the first to approach him, and when Mako told her he still has some problems with speaking Japanese
she automatically came up with idea she could help him learning it

thanks to her, now he doesn't have much problems with Japanese!
