UPDATE 12-11

Shadow just can't seem to catch a break. He will be getting retested for heartworms in January.

But let's see. He got an aggressive bacterial infection, so his face and neck are primarily hairless. It's almost fully better now after lots of treatments, and the hair is starting to come back a little.

Then, he was getting neutered. It managed to turn into a major invasive surgery, so he has stitches up half of his torso. Despite wearing a cone, he managed to tear out his stitches, which was very scary since his insides were starting to peep through the hole in his belly.

He was restitched save for a two inch incision to prevent infection. He's on the mend now and should be fully better in about 3 weeks.

UPDATE 10-6

Hello, everyone! Seeing as how this deviation continues to get favorites, I thought I'd offer up some updates.

Shadow's tests are STILL coming up as heartworm positive, but it's a very weak yes. The vet and medical companies are completely stumped. But it's not unheard of for it to take up to a full year for all the worms to die off, so we have our fingers crossed. If, in the end, he's still coming up as a weak yes, we're going to have to subject him to another round of the treatment, but it will be a milder form.

But, somehow, I believe everything will work out! Shadow acts happy and healthy. He's a really big, lovable goofball! He makes my whole family feel safer just having him around. He weighed about 85 pounds when we got him and he was emaciated. But now he weighs a healthy 100 pounds! It's hard to believe he's still the same dog that showed up at our porch step. <3

I want to thank you all again for all your kindness and support, it means a lot to us.
UPDATE 3-28

Shadow had his treatment and came home last week. He's doing okay...he's coughing a lot, which is normal. What isn't normal is he's coughing up blood. So we're really worried about him, and we still have several weeks before we're in the clear health-wise.

He's also lost a TON of weight; he appears to be skin and bones.

But the good news his, the past two days, his coughing has decreased significantly, AND he's eating and becoming more responsive. So there's definitely still hope!

UPDATE 3-16

Shadow's getting his treatment starting tomorrow. We are extremely lucky, and now we know part of the reason we've had such a hard time getting it. THEY HAVE STOPPED MAKING THE HEARTWORM MEDICINE.

Apparently they do this every now and again, cease production, then start producing it under a new name. But during that lull time, they have extremely limited supplies left, and THAT's why they had such a hard time tracking it down. AND they wouldn't have given it to us at all if Shadow hadn't started showing symptoms, which he did only just a few days ago. So we're extremely lucky.

NOTE: This will be the final update for the journal on my front page, as I want to be able to use my DA journal again. This specific entry will be updated still, as will the deviation, but they are going to be removed from featured statuses.

UPDATE 3-15

We finally got word back from the vet. They had gotten ONE heartworm treatment in, and are currently giving it to another dog. However, they have Shadow's medicine on rush order now! YES!

It should arrive either tomorrow or Wednesday. Since the dogs have to be kept under vet surveillance for 4-5 days, they only start heartworm treatments on either Mondays or Tuesdays. So if it comes in tomorrow, he'll start treatment tomorrow! If not, he'll start treatment next Monday.

Shadow has started showing the very early signs of his illness, which is a very minor cough. He still has plenty of time, and we're doing really good overall. He goes on a nice, long walk every day, and has finally been introduced to our other animals! Although he doesn't seem to like one of our cats much. But I don't blame him. She's a brat. ;D

Thank you again everyone who has helped us either monetarily, by spreading the word, or in spirit. You guys actions mean the world to me. <3

Didn't want y'all to think I forgot about ya! We FINALLY got word back from the shelter's yesterday, saying they had no money to spare.

The vet is actually OUT OF MEDICINE for his treatment! So we're waiting for them to get it back in, as are several other people. We won't know the actual, set-in-stone cost of the treatment until they get the meds in.

So now, it's just a waiting game. Shadow's doing very well and adjusting to his new home! We take him on a walk everyday, and he's getting really good on a leash. He's getting along well with our chihuahua mix, Rio, but we haven't fully introduced him to our other two dogs yet.

Fundraiser is OVER! Thanks to all of y'alls beyond incredible support, we have raised enough for Horse's treatment!!! I am so beyond happy, and can't thank y'all enough! <3

As used to I am of calling him Horse, that's not his name. We ARE keeping him! And his name is Moonshadow. But we're just gonna call him Shadow. Cliched it is, but better than other alternatives and I knew I wouldn't get my way with naming him Cerberus or Thanatos.

I'm gonna keep my own $5 commissions open, since after Horse's treatment, he needs to be neutered which in his case due to medical issues, will be more complicated and costly, but still doable. And it's not life threatening.

Thank you all again! I will still post updates on this deviation and my journal about Horse's...I mean, Shadow's journey.

Still no word from the vet about trying to get the shelter's help, and now we won't know until Monday. Luckily Horse has plenty of time before it gets too serious, and we've almost got enough funds! Thank you EVERYONE for all of your help so far.

I spent most of last night in tears, and today glued to my bed. Horse was right there with me, slobbering all over me! I learned today that we will be keeping him, after how upset my mum saw me after she said we probably wouldn't.

We're not even sure we can afford to keep the Horse, let alone afford the $500 needed to save his life.

But I am determined to save this beautiful dog, whether or not my family gets to keep him or makes sure he finds a very good home.
