Story « Exactly 500 Words
Morning sunlight reflected off floating dust as Hannah August saddled up her strong and gorgeous mare, Dunrite, for the cross country event. She could already feel both excitement and tension around her when she was simply tightening the girth. Her best friend, Chloe, calmed her down a bit by telling her only positive things. Just tacking up seemed to take forever. Hannah was so excited that she felt she had the energy to run a marathon. All at the same time, she was so nervous she felt as if she would simply pass out, right there in the barn breezeway.

Hoofbeats thundered across the Australian desert as the hot summer sun beat down on the pair. Both had been training for months, just for this one precious moment. A cloud of dust arose behind the sturdy pony as she pushed off and jumped gracefully over the first obstacle. The mare knew there were many more to come, but she was unaware that there would be animals scampering about that morning. As she turned a corner a group of kangaroo mice hopped in every which direction in order to get away from the horse. Dunrite leaped over where the mice had previously been and continued her journey, this time with her head held a little higher and her hooves moving a little faster. The next obstacle was fast approaching. It was a small ditch, no problem for a strong pony like Dunrite. The only problem was, this sand was rather slippery and the pony barely made it over to the other end without falling into the small trench. The pony continued onward as the sun rose, making everything seem a bit more colorful. The mare sped up as she approached the next jump, a horse shoe shaped brush fence. She quickly hurried over, possibly a bit too quickly. Her rider had to sharply pull on the reins to get Dunrite to make the slightest turn at such speeds. As the couple galloped on for a few more seconds, a coffin jump approached. Hannah had to use all the force she could possibly muster to get the energetic mare down to a “coffin canter.” Normally this obstacle was rather easy, but apparently not today. Once the pair had survived the coffin a drop fence appeared. The two flew over the log with ease, but the landing was rather tricky. Due to the sand being so, well, slippery, Dunrite seemed to do a ten feet sliding stop before bounding forward towards the table. The mare lengthened her stride and leaped over the huge obstacle. Being the size she was, Dunrite did hit the back of the table with her back legs, but thank god for eventing boots. The rest of the ride seemed to be pretty relaxing. The last jump was a simple roll top, which the strong mare was able to easily fly over. Hoofbeats slowed from a canter, to a trot, to a walk as Hannah cooled down her exhausted mare.
