Reracks: A Reference

Species: Rerack (Ree-rack) Reracks as plural. ‘Birds’ as slang.
Homeworld: Rerack
Language: Rahrish
Classification: Avian

Bright and colorful in both personality and plumage, Reracks are one of the more common races in the Galaxy. Reracks are well known firstly for their feathers, which resemble Earth Parrots in color, though both pattern and color are extremely varied. However blues and yellows are the more commonly found color. Darker shades like black or navy are rarely found on a Rerack, though it’s rooted in superstition that darker colored Reracks are able to commune with spirits or the supernatural. They have very large oval shaped eyes which are mainly designed to spot high contrast between lights and darks. This is a useful tool when flying through trees, as they need to spot gaps or ‘shapes’ to fly through in split seconds to avoid crashing. They also can see in a wide spectrum of color and are attracted by movement. Their eyes come in a variety of colors, though shades of yellow are most common. A unique feature for them as an avian race is a set of external ears. They are smallish and sit low on the head, though Reracks hear around the same rate as a human. Reracks, however, can hear more in the higher pitched spectrum. Reracks have three fingers and toes, all tapering to a sharp clawed point. Their feet have an inner toe that can be flexed into acting like a thumb, and it’s very useful when perching or walking on narrow tree branches. Reracks also have rather large heads and thick necks, and unlike most avian species they have an internal beak. The outside is completely feathered over a layer of skin, though this skin can act like lips, they are not very flexible. Also unique to them is small sharp, cone shaped teeth, which line the inside of their beaks, whereas most avians don’t have teeth at all. Also unique to them is the short thick lizard-like tail. This tail is an evolutionary trait which helped them navigate through the jungles as an important counter-weight. By swinging their tails, Reracks can change directions on a dime. Growing just over their tails is long, almost rooster like feathers. Both sexes have them, though males are usually brighter colored. Lastly, Reracks have a pair of short, blunt wings. They are designed to make quick, fast changes in direction, not for long distance. Reracks actually get tired quickly from flying, as they are used to quick flights from tree to tree. Reracks have a body shape similar to humans, and only grow to be slightly bigger than an average human male. Though their muscle mass, especially around the shoulders and torso, make them seem more ‘beefy’ than the average human.

Reracks are omnivores, eating mainly soft fruit and tree dwelling animals. They don’t hunt very often, but their favorite preys are large rodent like creatures that live in trees. Over meat they prefer soft fruits, and contrary to popular believe, they are not fond of nuts because their beaks are not built to crush them. Instead, they prefer just about any food that’s soft and sweet. In fact, they have a great love of sweet food and drink, and off world some Reracks find themselves in the candy or other food related business. Reracks hate bitter food and drink, so most will never touch hard alcohol, but instead go for more colorful fruity drinks. Reracks though know how to limit themselves, as an obese Rerack can’t fly, and this can spell death on their homeworld. They require a diet high in Vitamin C and Protein, which sometimes causes problems off world, so some Reracks carry supplements to take with them.

Reracks start looking for a mate around the time they hit 20. They are more emotionally attached to their significant others than most species, so often a prospective mate is usually a close friend or colleague that they have known beforehand. When both individuals discover that they like each other, both of them will agree to do a ‘trial’. Basically, this means they will both move in a dwelling with each other, and see if they can live/be compatible with each other. Reracks take marriage seriously, so this is an extremely important step, as divorce is pretty much unheard of or incredibly rare on their Homeworld. So after a period of usually a year together and they decide they make a pretty good fit, they will announce their joining to the village leader. The Leader will then enact a Rerack bonding ritual, and then they will officially be a couple. Joining used to be a rather quiet manner, but with the influx of different cultures via the stargates and wormholes, most modern Rerack today have a marriage ceremony today similar to a human marriage. It depends on the couple, some like their bonding ceremony to be quiet and private, while some like to invite their entire village for an elaborate party to celebrate. Same sex couples are welcomed just as much as a heterosexual couple.

When the pair decides they wish for a child, they simply copulate like most avian species. The female will develop a single egg for about 2 months, and then she will lay it. The egg itself is a little bigger than an ostridge egg, and cream and grey speckled. Females will only lay one egg at a time, there has been no recorded cases of twins ever being born. The egg is then kept warm for about another month, in which the newborn Rerack will hatch. Young Reracks are born helpless and uncoordinated, but after a few hours of drying off, they can usually stand and run around. They can’t fly however, until their flight feathers grow in at around 5 years of age. Reracks grow up quickly, reaching maturity at around 15 years of age and living to be around 40-50. Same sex couples are welcome to adopt orphaned young Reracks and are treated the same as if they were the couples own flesh and blood.

Their native Language, Rahrish, can be described as loud squawks in spoken vowels. It’s not a very complex language, but it’s pretty much impossible for most races to speak it due to the differences in vocal cords. They do learn and speak Basic pretty easily, with a slight accent. In Basic they tend to stretch out vowels, and since they have beaks, they have problems pronouncing ‘ooo’ sounds. So instead of ‘you’ and ‘blue’ you get ‘ya’ and ‘blaw’. Reracks are also tend, when very exited or angry, to revert to their native language. So a very angry Rerack will simply start squawking at the object of their anger, instead of swearing in Basic. This tends to put off other races, and Reracks use this to their advantage. Also, contrary to popular belief, Reracks are not songbirds, and attempting to sing usually ends in loud exited squawking, which hurts the ears for more sensitive species.

Socially, Reracks are good natured and kind. They are pretty warm to other races, and welcomed explorers after the wormholes opened with welcoming arms. They have a mindset to constantly learn new things, so thus they didn’t have much problem with explorers introducing new concepts to them. They live in large villages in the canopy (Think sorta like Ewoks) connected by bridges from building to building. As they are a pretty natural race, they never discovered things like bricks or cement, but mainly a adobe type material. In consequence, they never got more advanced than say, the 1800’s in human history. There is many factors for this, the main is there is simple not a lot of room in a rain forest to really develop things like cars or other tech. However with the introduction of technology from explorers, they are pretty much modernized now, well as much as their homeworld will allow. Still, they run into problems like corrosion, as Rerack is a very wet planet. Also, Reracks don’t usually wear clothes, as they really don’t need too. Their waterproof feathers offer all the protection they need. But also they get cold easily, as they are a tropical species, so off world they will wear clothes. On Rerack it’s usually just a pair of pants or a jacket, maybe a hat, or other odd things. Though an individual in special jobs, like a doctor or a village leader, will wear a garment that set them apart from other Reracks. Reracks learn things very quickly, so they find themselves in jobs like mechanics, because their inquisitive nature compels them to discover whatever they can about an object or person. This has also earned them the reputation to be somewhat nosy.

Rerack itself is a very lush and green planet. It has 2 large continents on top of a freshwater sea. Both continents are heavily forested, both situated around the equator, and both can be compared to the Amazon jungle on Earth. There is very little open space, save for the sea, and the topography is pretty consistent, occasionally peppered with high mountains and river basins. The continents are only separated by a few miles of open water, so Reracks were never isolated enough to evolve into 2 different subspecies. The two continents names are Arera and Regak, Arera are known for its medical plant farms, and Regak for its development of soldiers and law keepers. Their solar system contains only 4 planets, one which is Rerack. The other three planets are small celestial bodies that are too big to be a meteor and too small to be considered a true planet. Rerack has one moon. Their planet also contains and extremely high level of oxygen. Most off world species get light headed from the influx of extra oxygen, while on the flipside Reracks often have breathing problems offworld from lack off. Their chief exports are plants, wood, warriors, and skilled mechanics.

Rerack has no global government. In fact, there is no government for the separate continents either. Instead Reracks practice small village governments, where a leader is elected based on skill and intelligence. Leaders will watch over their villages until they step down (because they are old or wish to take another profession) or if they do a bad job and the locals declare a new election. Leaders are often put into leader positions after completing a task that requires a lot of cunning or bravery, and impressed, the locals will ask them to lead them. Leaders are required to settle disputes, mediate between neighboring villages, make sure everyone gets enough to eat, ect. Below leaders are lawmen, whose job is to carry out the wishes of the leader. And below them other positions of power such as priests, head Doctor, ect. Every year the village leaders will head off to one of the continents meeting grounds. This meeting place switches continents every year. There they discuss global issues. With the modernization of the planet, now they meet mostly to discuss trade with other planets, scientific advances, and election of representations of the Galactic Council. And because they have no global government and two continents to represent, they always choose 1 male and 1 female to go to council. The male is usually from Regak and the female from Arera, for obvious reasons. They take being on the Galactic Council very seriously, so they put a lot of care and thought into who they choose.

Reracks love and favor order, so naturally they chose a more orderly system to base their lives on. The worship a single goddess named Kaee’tahra, and many Reracks, if not following their common racial god, will often choose another, as faith is very important to them as a mindset. They put faith, charity, kindness, and openness as important personality traits, reflective of their race’s habits. So off world they are pretty much welcome, as they have a friendly vibe, and usually are active in local charity organizations. Since they are also rather tough, they also go into law enforcement, local armies, or high danger mechanic jobs. Whatever they choose to do with their lives, Reracks go into it with a song.
