I was listening to Vylet Pony's Spuer Pony World album, and I couldn't get the song "Dragon Riders" out of my head.

I like to think these are not dragons from de Badlands. This kind lives in a desert country, maybe on the other side the Celestial Sea.

That land is also occupied by little horses. Ponies who came from Equestrian hundreds of generations ago and since then have had almost no contact with the Kingdom.

Those ponies established their own culture, with no modern technology or magic, but also with ancient knowledge, lost centuries ago for the Equestrians. Here, they established a close relationship with the local dragons, based on honor and trust. Each rider and dragon make reciprocal oaths, and from there forward they're bound companions.

Btw, the saddles are based on reconstructions of ancient roman saddles. It is thought that romans rode their horses without stirrups, which I found much fitting for the pony riders, as it would've been really awkward to put a hoof inside one XD
