Backstory: Merlin was the second born child of Doctor Periwinkle (an Ice Delta Meowstic/Audino fusion) and her late Husband Noire (A Dark/Fire Ninetales/Arcanine), and the younger Brother of Seidhr. In a family of scientists Merlin wasn't ready for science or learning, his way of life was chasing bug Pokemon and exploring the Shimmerhold College where he was born. Sei was the exact opposite, loving to help their mother in the labs. Merlin, well, he kept escaping. There was exactly one thing he was good at, and that was finding out how to escape and outrun his mother and brother.

There came a point where Periwinkle just gave up, she saw her youngest son as hopeless, and let him do as he wished. Merlin got to explore, and to their surprise, he was good at it. He would come back to the College with all sorts of things he collected on his finds, including rare stones and specimens that Periwinkle was able to use in her classes.

It was then that Periwinkle got an idea, why not send Merlin off to become an adventurer? He would probably much more enjoy that life instead of exploring the areas surrounding Shimmerhold. So Merlin was equipped and was able to start his first long adventure towards Aethervale. It was shortly before leaving Shimmerhold that Merlin literally ran into Vivi, who was wandering about with her nose in a book. A prospective student of Shimmerhold all the way from Silentgrave Shores.
Periwinkle, who was escorting her son out of Shimmerhold had an idea that would both benefit this young child and her own son, as to create a team, you must have a group of two. It was simple. This young reclusive bookworm was to join Merlin on his adventures, and when she was older, Periwinkle would send a recommendation to the College, which would instate her a free ride to her education with room and board.
Vivi was unable to say no, seeing as this adventure could be seen as just another learning experience.
So the two took off to Aethervale, and with mostly Vivi's help, they were able to create the team of Wayfinders.
