Description
Pilgrims listen in rapt attention to one of the many prophets imprisoned along this road. The town that can be seen was built about a cathedral which dates back beyond scholars' records. A large cache of gold was found in the cathedral's catacombs and the high class now lives in relative comfort despite the poor harvests of late. Those who can afford it live off the trade of a neighbouring coastal fishing town. Since the gold was discovered a rash of severe birth defects and sudden oncomings of insanity have been plaguing the populace. After trading began, the fishermen and their families who accepted the gold as payment have been suffering the same ills. The particularly opulent burgomaster has become worried about his dwindling reserves, and after the discovery of further tunnels connecting to the cathedral's catacombs, he has taken to paying highly those who plumb its depths in search of more gold. Unfortunately these men invariably return completely mad, and desperately try to burn the cathedral to the ground. The burgomaster furiously condemns these men to the gibbets that line the road as a warning to those "weak of mind, and lax in duty." Those scarred and deformed by the gold's unwholesome influence flock to these prophets to hear their fractured gibberings of what they saw below the cathedral. It is rumored that the burgomaster's wife can birth naught but plump, healthy fish.Blue colerase pencil and Photoshop. This was published in Spectrum 11.

This reminds me of the scene in the movie "Willow" where Val Kilmer's character has been captured and locked in a cage. Your work is very inspiring.

in two words - KICK ARSE. It reminds me something like Goya or Bosch would conjure up. I'd like to see what your take on the "Stations of the Cross" would be, or perhaps scenes from "Paradise Lost" or the "Book of Enoch". absolutely fantastic! what's next?

I'm certainly impressed. The backstory adds so much color to the image, but the image is so powerful on its own. This IS what good illustration should be. This is a slice from a fully fleshed-out reality. This image tells its own story contained within an instant. It was well worthy of an inclusion within the Spectrum publication (congratulations!), and certainly worth a top favorite.

i WAS sort of dissapointed before when I saw your three previous works and you had a short description, but now i can read and be happy (lol). but other than that , i just have to point out that you have an extremely wild imagination. but im very sure you already know this; who else came up with mutated cattle and deformed humans with fish appendages?? wonderful work.. i need to fav this one as well as your.... moose......

pusa... kinilabutan ako don ha... (man... that picture gave me the shivers...)
when I opened devart and saw today's favorites in fantasy, I knew at once who the artist was...
I'm really mezmerized by your works and this particular piece is really something else. I seem to be transported to that place; seeing the deformed bodies, reaching out to the prophet as if he is their only chance of survival... heck, I might even be one of the fish people!
the stories that back-up your pictures are so realistic, you'd think they were out of some lost text from long ago, not just some work of fiction or fantasy...
I always look forward to your next deviation. Great work. Keep it up!

your work has the same kind of detail that you see in Durer's.. i'm interested in the length of time it takes to finish a piece and how much preparation you do, references, poses, etc..
are all the pieces related, part of the same world, and do you have any plans for it? novels, games?
and do you know of Ian Millers work? he has the same kind of detail, but in more of a style like etching..
